2017 Highlights: What’s in the stars for us all?
Balance, please! Our world has veered to extremes over the last few years. Earth’s seven billion-plus population has reached major divides around politics, nationality, race and gender—even as we make progressive gains in these areas. Extreme wealth and dire poverty butt against each other as politics and planetary trends polarize us.
In 2017, new cosmic trends could help bring us together and heal some of the rifts that have ravaged our planet. But it won’t be without some twists and turns (surprise, surprise). Here are some of the major highlights:
Jupiter in Libra: Striving toward peace
Global Jupiter is in Libra—the sign of peace, love and harmony—from September 9, 2016 until October 10, 2017. Jupiter only visits here every 12 years and its transits through Libra have historically heralded times of peace…we’re certainly hoping for more of the same this time around.
Multicultural ambassador Jupiter in balanced Libra can bring an era of diplomacy and cooperation. On a personal level, relationships will become a topic of fascination, as our culture seeks new ways of partnering and collaborating that work for our times. Perhaps we’ll see a worldwide spread of the Marriage Equality Act and the rise of communal living.
Jupiter Aspects: Power struggles with Uranus and Pluto
Jupiter will be challenged by two different aspects (angles) this year—a tense square (90-degree angle) to Pluto and a combative opposition to Uranus. On March 30 and August 4, Jupiter will enter into a standoff with powermonger Pluto in Capricorn. As the world pushes for harmony and collaboration, wealthy people in control may oppose those efforts.
New voices for peace will have to deal with the entrenched old guard as well as forces that abuse power or dominate to remain on top. In our personal lives, relationships can be strained by the realities of unhealed wounds. The Jupiter-Pluto squares push us to go deeper and handle our baggage before dragging it into our interactions.
On March 3 and September 28, Jupiter in harmonious Libra will oppose radical Uranus in Aries, the sign of individuality. Have we watered down the issues in our quest for feel-good togetherness? Are too many compromises being made, glossing over people’s anger and voices?
The Jupiter-Uranus oppositions challenge us to walk our talk instead of making feel-good speeches or fiery diatribes that aren’t backed up with concrete action. If you’ve gotten swept up in a relationship or friendship, these transits remind you not to lose track of your own interests.
On a political level, the Jupiter-Uranus oppositions could bring uprisings and fragmented political groups, if not the complete breakdown of governments or movements. Everything is up for questioning now, even “progressive” ideals and movements. Change and shakeups are afoot!
Jupiter in Scorpio: Intensity ignites
Things could get intense when Jupiter moves into Scorpio from October 10, 2017-November 8, 2018. With eagle-eyed Scorpio in command, it’s time to get past the feel-good kumbaya rhetoric, deep diving into the real issues instead. Scorpio rules transformation and reinvention, and its obsessive focus doesn’t miss a detail.
Freedom-loving Jupiter may feel a bit cramped in micromanaging Scorpio’s tightly-controlled domain. But great strides can be made when we pool our resources—emotional, financial, energetic—with strategic partners. Scorpio is about ownership and mergers. And, from buying real estate communally to making joint investments in the market, expansive Jupiter inspires us to get creative with our calculations.
Tantric Scorpio is also the sign of intimacy and lusty, soul-searing erotic escapades. Hello, sexual revolution? While this could bring some liberal and outspoken new attitudes about sex, it could also bring the spread of some less savory issues (like new strains of STDs). Progressive Jupiter, which rules publishing and learning, could help reform outdated sex education programs. We could see students learn not just about how babies are made but also how to dismantle gender stereotyping, navigate social media privacy in the age of Snapchat and sexting, and how to hopefully avoid the rape culture which has hit a pervasive new high. Scorpio rules the psyche, so understanding human behavior and motivations could make a huge difference in safe, consensual enjoyment of our bodies and sexuality.
Jupiter’s move into inquisitive Scorpio could lead to breakthroughs in research, especially around diseases spread through infections and the blood. Psychology is also ruled by Scorpio, so new therapy developments could emerge. Energy healing and energy medicine could also see breakthroughs, since Scorpio rules mysticism.
Saturn in 2017: Waiting for the world to change?
Meantime, disciplinarian Saturn spends its last year in worldly Sagittarius, where it’s been visiting on and off since December 2014. International and cross-cultural relations have gotten a sobering reality check under Saturn’s rulership. This transit also sounded the rallying cry for educational reform (Sagittarius rules higher learning and universities), as college graduates face staggering student debt and a job market that has no use for their degrees and specialties.
Immigration has become a huge headline ever since Saturn entered global Sagittarius. Governments must continue to seek new policies and solutions for the refugee crisis, ones which work for all nations involved. Last year, Saturn exposed a huge xenophobic backlash: Donald Trump promised to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexican border, and open anti-Muslim sentiment reared its ugly head. Since Sagittarius rules publishing, here’s hoping we’ll use the media to spread greater awareness, tolerance and understanding of each other’s stories.
On December 19, Saturn will move on to its home sign of Capricorn, restructuring governments, corporations, the economy and world leadership until March 2020. While this may restore some order to the chaos in the world, we must be careful to keep power in the hands of the people. Both Saturn and Capricorn rule patriarchy; and sadly, the old school and male-dominated structures could fortify themselves in some places. (On the flipside, other such monoliths will be challenged by Saturn.) This cycle could give rise to autocratic rulers who pave the path for a major uprising when Saturn enters revolutionary Aquarius in three years. We may need to take measures against Big Brother-style stifling of our individual expression—for example, fighting to put regulations on companies that mine our personal data in destructive ways.
Saturn-Uranus Trines: Old guard & new radicals unite?
Luckily, stern Saturn will travel in a harmonious trine (120-degree angle) with revolutionary Uranus from January-June and October-November, which can help institute real progress. Laws, systems and governments (ruled by Saturn) may finally be instated that reflect humanitarian issues and the outcries of the greater population (Uranus’ domain). The people in power may actually give power to the people under this rare aspect. Here’s hoping!
Venus Retrograde: Love on the rocks?
This year also brings us a retrograde (backward) transit of love-planet Venus from March 4-April 15. Venus reverses course every 18 months, which is a sort of “blackout period” for love, as our normal stores of compassion and compromise go MIA.
With Venus retrograde in self-centered Aries and illusion-spinning Pisces, that so-called prince or princess could revert into a hideous frog right before your eyes. Conduct your due diligence before getting swept off your feet. If you’re planning a wedding, avoid these dates if possible—or plan to renew your vows in a year!
Numerology: A “1” Universal Year.
Time for a universal reboot? 2016 was especially hard because the world was going through a “9” Universal Year—the close of a long cycle that brings transitions and weighty spiritual challenges. As we shift into a “1” Year, the dawn of a new era arrives, but along with it can come some difficult changes as we orient ourselves to the bright light of this fresh new reality. (See our Numerology section at the end of this book to learn all about it!)
Strut Your Stuff: It’s the Year of the Rooster
Move over, Monkey—the preening Rooster is taking over! January 27 kicks off the Year of the Fire Rooster, a feisty year that could see some big egos and alpha types strutting around like they own the place. But the Rooster is associated with the sign of Virgo, so it will also be a meticulous year where we must pay attention to details.
On the positive side, Rooster energy is brave, hardworking and inspires leadership qualities. Under the sharp and observant Rooster vibes, not much will slip past our watchful eyes. Here’s hoping we can channel this energy into productive change.
