Virgo Full Moon: Control freaks, unite!

brushing teethI have a confession: I’m a control freak. Big surprise, yeah yeah. But I’m not embarrassed to admit it—because I know that you’re one, too. We all are. And if you’re harboring the illusion that you’re a freewheeling bohemian who’s all “live-and-let-live,” this weekend’s Virgo full moon is sure to show you otherwise.

Once a year, the lunar spotlight of truth reveals our hidden issues. On February 28th, the annual Virgo full moon will expose our shortcomings, imperfections, trust issues, and inherent human flaws. Yay, right? That bead of flop sweat left glistening on your brow for all the world to see. The snot-leaking “ugly cry,” as Oprah coins it. The humiliating face-plant or failure or fart that happens right in front of your crush. Makes me cringe just to think about it.

Sun in Pisces: One Man’s Junk…

Tyree with Paint I’ve always loved the saying, “one man’s junk is another man’s treasure.” Today, the Sun enters dreamy, magical, transformative Pisces, the sign that knows how to go deep into the underground to mine for gold. So it’s fitting for me to write about one of my favorite artists, Tyree Guyton, whose work takes this expression to a completely brilliant level.

Guyton, like myself, was born and raised in Detroit, MI. In 1967 (5 years before I was born), he watched the city burn in the riots. In 1986, he was moved to take a stand against the poverty, crime, and despair that blanketed our home city. Thus, The Heidelberg Project was born. Using vacant lots and mostly abandoned houses (including the one he grew up in) as his canvas and discarded objects as him medium, he’s turned an entire city block into a vibrant Wonderland.

John Mayer: Learning a Libra Lesson

The heavy footfalls of taskmaster Saturn are echoing on John Mayer’s doorstep. This week, the Libra musician came under fire for his controversial remarks in shockingly candid Rolling Stone and Playboy interviews. Fans have turned sour–and even accused him of racism–after reading his crass remarks about Black women (“I have a Benetton heart and a…David Duke c–k”) and his use of the “n-word.” Mayer has since broken down in tears while performing, but his remorse is falling short of the forgiveness mark for many—especially African-American fans who embraced the singer and his music.

Valentine’s Day 2010: Viva la romance

Gather your long-stemmed roses, your Whitman’s samplers, your sentimental cards. This Valentine’s Day brings an unexpected wave of Hallmark moments, as romantic Venus enters Pisces, joining the sensitive moon and optimistic Jupiter. Forgo the bitter tirades about this “commercial holiday.” Let yourself believe in love—in all its messy, wonderful, heartbreaking realness. As human beings, we’re all suckers for a good happy ending. Cynicism is only a means of self-protection—but it’s also the killer of love and connection. Our friend Jason, a former professional athlete, told us that on the football field, if you played not to get hurt, you could actually get injured even worse. Our translation: By holding ourselves rigid to avoid heartbreak, we are in greater danger of being hurt. So let yourself hope and believe. Be a “fool for love” for just one day. It’s only in that space that love can stand a chance.

2010: Year of the Tiger

The Year of the Tiger roared in on February 13, 2010— the Chinese New Year, 4708. After last year’s slow, plodding Ox energy, the pace of life increases to an exciting new velocity. In Chinese lore, the Tiger is known for its bravery, and is a bold and courageous fighter. Always searching for excitement, the Tiger lives dangerously and often finds itself center stage. A little of the Tiger’s competitive spirit revives our life force energy, giving everything a dazzling, vibrant edge.

Jennifer Aniston: Ready to Break that Dry Spell?

Dear Jennifer Aniston,

Jennifer Aniston & Gerard ButlerYou have been the poster girl for “Unlucky in Love” for far too long. We can’t help but like you and think that this sucks. You’re genuine, sweet, and you also have boundaries. Even though the papz are tracking your every move, you’re not staging drama for the benefits of their flashbulbs. You love dogs, you do yoga, you’re friends with Oprah, and you’re nice to people. That bullshit about your parent’s divorce and your mom’s tell-all book? We just feel that you’re ready to move on…all the way.

So we were happy to read in People.com (the only *tabloid* we trust) that you spent your 41st birthday with the delectable Gerard Butler. He’s a Scorpio, you’re an Aquarius. It’s a combo that’s working quite well for Demi (Scorpio) and Ashton K (Aquarius), and we’ve been feeling some positive vibes there since you began shooting “The Bounty Hunter” with him. Spicy Scorpio energy is definitely more intense than your laid back Aquarius cool, but your receptors are all too ready for that electrifying jolt. Plus, we hear Scorpios are great in bed–and not just because he’s Gerard Butler.
