Valentine’s Day 2010: Viva la romance

Gather your long-stemmed roses, your Whitman’s samplers, your sentimental cards. This Valentine’s Day brings an unexpected wave of Hallmark moments, as romantic Venus enters Pisces, joining the sensitive moon and optimistic Jupiter. Forgo the bitter tirades about this “commercial holiday.” Let yourself believe in love—in all its messy, wonderful, heartbreaking realness. As human beings, we’re all suckers for a good happy ending. Cynicism is only a means of self-protection—but it’s also the killer of love and connection. Our friend Jason, a former professional athlete, told us that on the football field, if you played not to get hurt, you could actually get injured even worse. Our translation: By holding ourselves rigid to avoid heartbreak, we are in greater danger of being hurt. So let yourself hope and believe. Be a “fool for love” for just one day. It’s only in that space that love can stand a chance.

Ophi, Chad & TimIn that spirit, we want to share the tale of Tim & Chad, an adorable couple for whom we got the chance to play Cupid two years ago on SIRIUS radio. Chad, a Chicago chef, met NYC publishing executive Tim while Tim was visiting the Windy City. Sparks flew, but Tim had to return to New York the next day. They wondered whether fate was dealing them a lucky hand or playing a cruel cosmic joke.

Fortunately, Chad called in to SIRIUS, and we advised him that the stars were aligned for long-distance love. Since Chad is a Pisces and Tim a Cancer, we knew this romantic Water sign couple could click for the long haul. Indeed they did! With our encouragement, Chad decided to give this soul connection a chance. Two years later, the pair is happily together. In fact, we hear that Tim’s parents adore Chad—an absolute must for a family-oriented Cancer. We met them last year at our book signings in New York and Chicago (Chad brought us to-die-for chocolate cakes that he made himself. Yum!) As of today, the happy couple commutes between their respective hometowns, and will celebrate their two-year anniversary in a few days. Happy anniversary, guys!

Tim at Magnolia BakeryFor the rest of you—especially the single and lovelorn—we hope this sweet story reminds you that you never know when Cupid will aim his arrow at you. Love often arrives when we least expect it, and in a different package than we imagine.

If you’re in a relationship, learn from Chad and Tim to make each moment special. Not getting to see each other every day forces them to make their time together count. Why not bring some of that magic to your own partnership, no matter how long you’ve been together?

Happy Valentine’s Day, everyone!
