Turning Points & Breaking Points: The August Cardinal Cross

Astrology followers have been abuzz with news of a rare planetary event happening this August called the Cardinal Cross. Sounds like the ordination ceremony for a Roman Catholic clergyman (at least, to us). What it really is: a cycle when SEVEN planets in the cardinal signs of Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn will form a cross-shaped configuration in the sky. More specifically, these planets are in “squares” (meaning they’ll be at 90-degree angles to one another), an astrological angle that symbolizes dynamic tension, unavoidable change, and a tug-of-war between forces that don’t naturally fit together. Others will be in “opposition” (180 degrees apart), a similar sort of face-off.

While we often see two, even three, planets squaring or opposing each other, it’s rare that so many engage in heated dialogue at once. To top it off, the cardinal signs are known for stubbornness. (Think of the Aries or Capricorns you know—great leaders, but not famous for backing down. Or the Libras and Cancers—they pretend to go with the flow, but oh, the passive-aggressive backlash and resentment when they do!).

A metaphor for this Cardinal Cross could be an arms negotiation between the U.S., Iran, Israel and Russia. Or a Real Housewives of New Jersey conflict resolution session between its four cast members. The caveat: nobody’s leaving until SOMETHING has been settled or decided. Everyone must give something up for the greater good, but it will require a delicate balance, drawn in the face of much resistance. (Bravo’s Andy Cohen and the U.N. Secretary-General would earn some serious overtime.)

August 7th is the big Cardinal Cross day, because the Cancer moon completes the actual cross shape. However, the effects are already palpable. Several of the planets involved are already in square—and you can probably feel the tension (or the exciting changes) brewing in your own life.

Planets involved:

Jupiter — planet of expansion (in Aries, sign of the self/individual)
Uranus
— planet of radical change (in Aries, sign of the self/individual)
VS.
Venus
— planet of harmony (in Libra, sign of relationships)
Mars
— planet of aggression & action (in Libra, sign of relationships)
Saturn
— planet of restriction and caution (in Libra, sign of relationships)

VS.
Pluto
— ruler of the unconscious & deep transformation (in Capricorn, the sign of career and ambition)
VS.

Moon — ruler of emotions and reactions (in Cancer, the sign of home and family)

That’s a whole lot of contrasting energy happening at once. Jupiter, the ruler of expansion and risks, isn’t happy fighting over the last drumstick with Saturn, the father of restriction and temperance. Gracious, well-heeled Venus would prefer to avoid the intensity of Pluto bringing up everyone’s dark sides and moral transgressions at her cheery summer cocktail party in the Hamptons. Yet, the clashes are inevitable.

Naturally, if you’re a cardinal sign (Aries, Cancer, Libra or Capricorn), you’ll be affected the most. However, each of us will somehow have to hit “reshuffle” in our own lives. Expect to feel pulled between personal desires, family, relationships and work—a classic modern dilemma played out in the astrological amphitheater. Political tension could certainly build, hopefully forcing an effective intervention for the BP disaster and other international crises.

Our August Monthly Horoscopes will have more details on how the Cardinal Cross affects your sign specifically. The best advice: remain flexible and open to change, but also know your bottom line. Pick your battles and stand up for your principles—but not just for the sake of winning the argument. Be willing to look at yourself, but call a time-out if debates get too heated. Change is nigh, but you’ll waffle between facing it like a warrior and a wimp.

As Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “Foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds.” Or, as Kenny Rogers sang, “You’ve gotta know when to hold ‘em and know when to fold ‘em.” Just please, let’s all check ourselves before staging our own versions of Teresa Giudice table-flipping and Danielle Staub weave-pulling. Like each season of reality TV, the effects of this Cardinal Cross shall pass. Don’t let your own bad behavior be caught on tape, or end up a permanent part of history.

Thanks so much for this- very informative! I’m a capricorn with a moon in cancer, leo or virgo rising (not sure of birth time) and I can say that it has been lightweight chaos over here this year. My next steps seem a bit uncertain though, sometimes I have to fight to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

I am an Aquarius man dating a Pisces man. Things have been kind of weird lately, its been 2 years. I hope this put things down a bad track. maybe we will just learn more about each other?

  6. Ophira Said,

Hopefully the cardinal cross will help make things clearer, even if there’s a bit of temporary confusion. It will draw a line in the sand, especially if your chaos has been from not knowing what to do next. Good luck! Also, when Pluto goes direct in Capricorn on September 14th, things will get much clearer for Caps!

  7. Ophira Said,

Thank your lucky stars that Saturn just left your intimacy sector (after 3 years) — Aquarians are now less likely to resist the uncomfortable feelings of vulnerability that relationships bring up. Of course, now it’s his turn to learn those same lessons about boundaries, balanced giving and receiving and trust. Hang in there if you think it’s worth it. Take some classes, travel, expand your own horizons now and don’t just focus on the relationship. Good luck!

The Leo new moon on August 9th brings lots of new starts. And Leo-Sag can be a fun, lasting combo. Take time to get to know each other as friends…that’s your big lesson now. Slow down and don’t rush into stuff. Although Leos are romance junkies, it’s best to make sure you form a solid friendship first. Good luck!

  17. Ophira Said,

    July 31, 2010 @ 4:25 pm

Never worry, Vijju! (Although as Capricorn risings ourselves, we know that’s easier said than done.) Saturn in the 9th house is actually a very mild, pleasant placement. Just means you could earn a few advanced degrees or wait until later in life to see the world. Welcome the structure that Saturn brings. It’s “exalted” in Libra, one of the best possible places it could be. What Libra couldn’t use a bit more structure, anyhow? Our advice with Saturn, like with any coach or personal trainer: don’t resist the hard work. You’re building a muscle and that takes time. Set some realistic goals and work on them a bit every day. You’ll be proud of who you become!

  18. Ophira Said,

Be sure to read the just-posted Leo monthly forecast on Astrostyle.com. The Leo new moon August 9th will bring some nice news! Take it easy with the guys — Leos need to slow down and learn how to become friends without rushing into romance.

Check out the August monthly forecast that we just posted. Lots of info on how this will affect you as a Capricorn. You can also read the Gemini monthly horoscope for additional insight, since that’s your rising sign. Our advice: hang tight through all the changes of August. September looks MUCH better and things will really settle in. Change is hard for Caps, but believe in yourself and have no regrets!

  20. Ophira Said,

    July 31, 2010 @ 4:32 pm

Yes, lots of career changes for Caps — and a great time to establish yourself professionally for both your Sun and rising sign. Just don’t cut corners. For example, if you’re getting headshots done for acting, make sure they’re first class. Or signing with an agent — don’t rush into a deal. That sort of thing. Insist on quality and don’t shy away from getting more training or credentials if you need!

  21. Ophira Said,

I’m an early Cancer with Virgo rising and Aquarius moon married to a late Capricorn with Libra rising. We’ve had a difficult couple of years, though we are weathering it well and growing a lot together. We are hoping for relief for a home-related situation and for my husband’s work situation to improve. It sounds like this might be in the stars? This is a wonderful and very helpful site!

OJEEEEE… I had just chaos in this year. (: Generally in all horoscopes say for pisces will be a lucky year in 2010. What will come for me? I have planned for a long trip in this month. I will be able to travel?

  26. christina Said,

I think you are both amazing. I love your outlook and your creative and growth oriented interpretations. You are always so helpful in a very evolved manner.
My sun and moon are in Aries, (april 9) at the same degree – and my rising sign is at 15 degrees in Capricorn. Woohooo! This cardinal cross is all over me. I have been working on world changing projects and have had a heck of a time getting them off the ground…and my love life is sadly ‘appearing’ totally opposite to what I hoped it would. I am looking beyond this ‘cross’ of revolutionary changes…and hoping when the dust settles bad stuff is flushed out and good stuff begins…but it seems like a lot of projections on the cardinal signs is almost like…confusion…wha? whe? who? So much confusion…clarity on its way?

  27. Ophira Said,

    August 1, 2010 @ 6:34 pm

Thank you so much! Yes, yes, clarity is DEFINITELY on its way. But heed the words of Winston Churchill in the meantime: “When you’re walking through hell, keep walking.” In other words, don’t give up and you’ll make it through this cardinal craziness stronger and more self-aware than ever.

  28. Ophira Said,

    August 1, 2010 @ 6:36 pm

You’ll certainly be able to travel, and things should get interesting when Uranus goes into Pisces again on August 14th. Just take extra travel precautions when Mercury goes retrograde on the 20th, especially if you’re traveling with other people or meet anyone new. Take it slow!

  29. Ophira Said,

    August 1, 2010 @ 6:38 pm

Thanks so much! It’s a big year for both signs, not just with this cardinal cross, but because of the eclipses that fell in your signs in June and July. You might want to read the monthly horoscopes for your signs from June & July — they’re posted on the site at http://www.astrostyle.com/Scopes/Monthly_Scope. Things will especially improve for your husband later in September, and hopefully sooner. Hang in there! This is all part of the process, and you’ll understand it in hindsight.

Go on the trip, of course! Your mindset and attitude are always more powerful than astrology, or anything else. This is not meant to be approached superstitiously — just be an eager student and keep the Buddhist “beginner’s mind” while you travel. The cardinal cross can reveal wonderful things if you make it an opportunity to learn about your own patterns, especially which ones work and which don’t. Observe yourself and don’t react. Pick up a copy of “The Power of Now” to read on the plane! P.S. The Leo new moon on 8/9 is a great day for relationships for your Aquarius husband. Make it a day where you set some inspiring new goals and plans for the next six months together. Bon voyage and have a great trip!

I am a Scorp w/ Cap asc & Pisces moon dating a (much older) Capricorn. I usually find a lot of “truth” in the Cap horoscopes – probably b/c I have Saturn there too. Things have recently faultered but FINALLY our relationship seems to be on track for the long haul – seems like he needed to get some stuff together in order for that to happen. I have a feeling both of us are going to be affected by the cross though; anything to look out for? thank you as always for your insight.

I hope things come to an end soon!!! does this cross help in any way or hinder my progress.. I don’t mind change but enough is enough !! I want my happy life back..Also my boyfriend is a Virgo/Virgo any scoop !!!

  39. Margo Said,

    August 3, 2010 @ 9:44 am

Thank you for showing the light to Capricorns at the end of the tunnel! You advised Capricorns not to rush with signing long-term contracts. But what about rushing someone else? Is there something that is better to be done/finalized before Aug 7?

  40. Ophira Said,

    August 4, 2010 @ 6:08 am

You and the boyfriend will both benefit from Saturn leaving Virgo. It was in your money sector since fall 2007, a rough time for Leos and cashflow/work. Things should pick up in September even more. Set some clear intentions for the next 6 months (and some dreams!) at the August 9th Leo new moon, which is your personal new year.

  41. Ophira Said,

    August 4, 2010 @ 6:10 am

Not really — but you also shouldn’t sleep on taking care of business. If you KNOW in your gut it’s time to make a move, then do it. Move up from driving 25mph to, say, 40. But rushing is never advised for your sign.

  42. Ophira Said,

    August 4, 2010 @ 6:11 am

Never fear: on August 14th, Uranus returns to Pisces, your career sector, followed by Jupiter on September 9th. Go back to old employers or prospects from earlier this year. Ask old colleagues and mentors for referrals. The tension you feel is absolutely the cardinal cross — it’s affecting your eighth house of long-term finances. Some of this is subconscious stress, possibly your fear of being “trapped” in a job. Work through those deeper issues, and do some meditating/visualizing. The Law of Attraction is in your corner. Read the August monthly horoscope for more info!

  43. Ophira Said,

    August 4, 2010 @ 6:15 am

The effect of the cross will probably be to wake him up to what really matters, especially around family, home and commitments. He’s going to get clear on what really matters to him, but he may also be preoccupied by career. Scorpios, meantime, need to work on letting go and not obsessing. It’s a real discipline for your sign to SURRENDER — as in, a weak muscle that will take a lifetime to build. Focus on developing your own rich, inner life, possibly through a creative or artistic outlet. Yoga, energy healing, meditation, etc. also help. Anything but spending your days watching Cap like a hawk! September will really pick up speed in a good way for love. As the saying goes, “put the focus back on yourself” in the meantime! ‘Codependent No More’ or ‘Women Who Love Too Much’ might be good reads for any Scorps out there…or ‘Mama Gena’s School of Womanly Arts’ (learn how to make your own pleasure a priority and become irresistible as a result).

I haven’t felt any let up since Saturn left Virgo though and am now worried about this cardinal cross. I also may be traveling in mid-September to go back to something I started in 2006 and put on hold in mid-2008, with Mercury retrograde and all these funny planetary aspects, should I be as worried as I am?

I read you every day at Elle on line and it’s like I’m addicted on you two :) My Sun is in 22 degrees Gemini and rising sign is in 19 degrees Cancer,so I’m getting really scared on this 7th August! Uranus is in 08 degrees Scorpio and Venus is in 06 degrees Taurus, and I’m already experiencing some huge changes in my life…after such a long time I’m again single and I’m trying to move on with my love life and my career.Do I need to be afraid and insecure? Thank you both

  48. Ophira Said,

    August 5, 2010 @ 6:42 am

Thank you so much! Our advice to you and EVERYONE: nobody ever needs to be afraid or insecure. Can any good come from it? No way. Astrology is a guide and a tool, but we all have free will and should never feel like victims of the stars (or anything else). Your intense feelings and emotional changes are the product of Pluto in your 8th house and its squares to your sectors of love, friendship, pleasure and the future — which is making everything feel extreme for Geminis (note how many other Gems have responded to this post). Saturn is also in your love and dating sector as of July 21st, so it’s time for a calm, thoughtful and paced-out approach to romance — not the usual Gemini style. As for career, Jupiter (luck planet) goes back into your career sector on September 9th, making for a great rest of 2010. You should be making new friends, exploring, networking, and embracing change until then. The two words to tell yourself when you start to freak out: SLOW DOWN. Hope that helps!

  49. Ophira Said,

    August 5, 2010 @ 6:45 am

Hi there! See our response to lady_977, who is also Gemini w/ Cancer rising. Lots of changes in career and emotional life for Geminis. Jupiter and Uranus in Aries are giving your sign a lot of nervous energy as you embark on new paths. An unusual feeling for your sign! Things will stabilize a lot in September, and Jupiter and Uranus will be back in your career sector from September-early 2011. Just hang in there through the nervousness of August and don’t make any rash moves. You’ll feel more confident in your decisions come next month. Sounds like you’re on a great path! Just be in the moment and stop freaking out about the future and ‘where it’s going.’

  50. Ophira Said,

Hey Tiffany! We’re also Sag with Cap rising — so we feel ya (and the cardinal cross). Advice: Sags tend to act first, think second, or to start huge projects without a master plan. Of course, the Capricorn rising saves our a$$es in the end, but what’s best is to just slow down, break up the day between work and pleasure/fun, and not concentrate too much energy in any one direction. Take it a day at a time!

    Hi,
I am a leo (born on 1st august) and even though I read that leos will not be affected much by the cardinal cross my husband (gemini) after 10 years of marriage have come to realise that we are more friends than partners and wants to remain just friends with me. Needless to say that I am emotionally attached to him and not too sure how to respond to this. He has decided to move out and I have come to accept his decision. He now wants to get a joint mortgage with me and I am totally confused as to where this relationship is heading….
Is it an effect of the cardinal cross?

  59. Ophira Said,

    August 20, 2010 @ 9:18 am

Sorry to hear that. It may be the cardinal cross touching your husband’s 8th house of intimacy and marriage (as well as real estate and joint property) that’s causing this decision. This week is particularly intense! With Saturn now in your friendship sector, you need to practice more boundaries. Be careful about merging your finances if you’re splitting up. Wait until September 12th, when Mercury goes direct and the cardinal cross eases up. This could be a temporary split, but you need to focus on what YOU want first and articulate that clearly.

Leo and Aquarius are opposite signs, which can be exciting but challenging (think of Leo Whitney Houston & Aquarius Bobby Brown). Trouble is, Leo is a passionate fire sign and ruler of the heart. Aquarius is the sign of casual connections and friendship, as well as emotional detachment. You can easily get polarized as a couple, with you doing all the emoting and him pulling away because he’s overwhelmed. Be sure to check out our book, Love Zodiac, for more about the Aquarius man (there’s a complete chapter). One thing’s for sure, though: a Leo deprived of affection, attention and warmth will not find happiness. Hopefully you can work it out! As for school, with Saturn now in Libra, it’s a great time to return for training in any field of beauty. Definitely focus there!

There can definitely be a love-hate thing between your signs, especially since Tauruses like to “manage” their mates and a Pisces will resist any kind of control, often by being passive-aggressive or disappearing. Yes, Saturn was in his relationship sector, and now it’s in his intimacy sector, so that’s a challenge. However, you can lead a horse (or Fish) to water, but you can’t make him drink. With Jupiter in your twelfth house of endings, you need to explore why you can’t let this relationship go. After all, he IS your ex. What are you holding onto? What battle are you trying to win? Don’t dig in your heels like a stubborn Bull, because you’ll only hurt yourself. The key for Taurus is to SURRENDER. If it’s meant to be, divine forces will work this out. In the meantime, you may want to heal any issues around control and abandonment that are keeping you locked in this dynamic. Good luck!

Hopefully you’ll make it to “‘Til Death Do Us Part” with your man-Carmen, buuuuut…we have to admit, the Taurus-Gemini combo can be a tricky one. This week’s cross between Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto is all about letting go for you — not of your hopes and visions for the future, but of control and an attachment to things turning out a certain way. Best of luck practicing that, because it can be tricky for Taurus. Once you fix your mind on things going in a set direction, you don’t like to change course. Work on “going with the flow” and be open to the unexpected. Be extra nice to each other for the next 3 weeks while Mercury is retrograde, too!

Congratulations — you made it! Relief is here indeed, but you can’t just treat the whole Saturn in Virgo cycle like a bad dream that’s over. (You know, like someone who loses 100 pounds then decides to reward himself with a box of Twinkies.) What are the lessons you learned about yourself, who you are in the world, and what fills you with a sense of purpose? Now it’s time to build those into your daily life and habits, even the way you earn money. Turn self-discovery into tangible and even profitable results. Don’t rush — slow and steady wins the race.

Be sure to check our Monthly Horoscopes for details on how it’s affecting you! Mainly, the work and finance houses are being touched in your chart. This week will challenge you to figure out how to manage your money and assets for both long- and short-term fulfillment. Check to see where you may be reacting with dramatic emotions rather than sensible logic. With Mercury going retrograde today in Virgo, it’s a good time to evaluate your partnerships and contracts with an extra keen eye. Good luck!
