Here’s how we turned our life purpose into a full-time career…as astrologers! Plus, learn about B-School, the program that helped make that happen.
Do you dream of the freedom of working for yourself—but you’re not sure how to pull it off? Maybe you have a solid day job that pays the bills but doesn’t light your fire. Maybe you have a brilliant idea but no clue where or how to start. Should you slowly build your idea before leaving your corporate gig? Or should you rip the Band-Aid off and go for it?
You may not have a clear idea. But the one thing you DO have is passion.
So how do you translate that spark into a sustainable career path? How can you have more time for your family, your creative gifts, your idea that can truly heal and touch people’s lives?
As entrepreneurs for over two decades (we’ve never worked a full-time job for anyone longer than 9 months!), these are questions we’ve grappled with since our early 20s. We’ve had side hustles, failures and triumphs—and it’s a constantly evolving process.
One of our key missions at Astrostyle is to help you find and embrace your light. As our fellow Sagittarius Winston Churchill said, “We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.” Somewhere between the two lies your destiny. The world needs that unique gift that only you can offer.
To encourage you, we’re sharing our own entrepreneurial journey, which started back in the 1980s when our dad lost his job. Read on…
Our entrepreneurial story: it started with a family crisis.
When we were 15, our father told us, “Ophi and Tali, never work for anyone else if you don’t have to. Having your own business is freedom.”
We’re not sure if he meant for his words to make such an impression. But they sure did.
Our dad said this a few months after being fired, without notice, from his factory job—a truly scary moment in our childhood. An immigrant from Israel, our father worked for years at an electronics shipping warehouse for a low hourly wage. He fit the classic bootstrapping immigrant profile, waking up early and heading out the door just as the sun was rising. We grew up in Detroit—the hardworking Motor City that’s seen its share of transformations.
Lemons into lemonade: what our dad taught us.
In the evenings and on weekends, our father ran a side business landscaping, a skill he’d acquired growing up on an Israeli kibbutz. As an enterprising Sagittarius (the same sign as us), he quickly turned lemons into lemonade. A day after he was fired, our dad hung his “shingle” (a pickup truck with some tools), and Shimon’s Landscaping was born.
Our father’s indomitable drive showed us how to turn a breakdown into a breakthrough. He leveraged a crisis into an opportunity—a divine sign to pursue his passion for plants, the outdoors and above all, freedom.
Fast-forward 25 years and our dad just retired from his own business. He’s got tendonitis in his foot, but he’s a satisfied man who can happily look back and say, like fellow Sagittarius Frank Sinatra, he “did it [his] way.”
How we started a thriving business…then got stuck.
As our father’s daughters, we were determined to take his teachings to the next level, and to to succeed without the setbacks our dad encountered. And that’s how we dove into the wild world of business ownership…
Even as we were studying at The University of Michigan (education was another value our dad drummed into us relentlessly), it was always in the back of our minds, “We’re going to work for ourselves.”
In the early 1990s, we started our own magazine, HUES, as a college project and turned it into a national publication sold through major bookstores and newsstands. It was a labor of love, born from our desire to see the beauty, strength, ideals and wisdom—of women of all cultures, shapes and sizes—represented in the media.
HUES was a philosophical success, but not a financial one, so we sold it to another company who kept it alive for a couple more issues. From there, we both worked for a couple different magazines in New York City (Tali for a short-lived one called Build, Ophi for Ms.) and then went to some dot-com startups, using our self-taught web design skills and art school degrees. We were forever determined to make sure we never had to work the cubicle life or spend our days bored out of our minds.
Follow the obsession: it could be your calling.
All along, we were reading charts for friends, devouring astrology books and guessing everyone’s zodiac sign at parties. Soon, we were offered a column in BUST magazine, then Teen People in 2002, and our first book deal. Without trying, our passion had turned into a career. We let it grow organically. And it did…until we hit the inevitable plateau.
Tools, resources and education: why being a lifelong learner is essential.
Anyone who reads our horoscopes knows: we love to recommend books, classes and insightful articles. We believe strongly in self-educating and being lifelong learners. And we are your guinea pigs! We’ve taken many personal growth seminars and online classes. One course has created such dramatic results, that we jumped at the chance to share it with you.
That class is Marie Forleo’s B-School.
Marie Forleo’s B-School is an 8-week online training course that teaches you how to create a business and life you love. B-School teaches passionate innovators like you how to “market” (a word that once repelled us) ideas in a way that’s honest, heartfelt and from a place of service. It’s designed for any entrepreneur—budding or existing—to master the practical basics of launching a successful online business. Or, in Marie’s words, B-School “teaches smart, highly effective and ‘non-douchy’ online marketing strategies to business owners who want more sales and more impact from their online presence.”
You don’t have to be a web designer, social media addict or even tech-savvy to take this class. Marie teaches how to identify your audience, write copy that speaks to them, and to create offerings that they actually want. (In fact, our popular compatibility guide How To Get Along With Anyone…Yes, Even That Person was born out of B-School.)
B-School: blasting past the plateau into prosperity.
We signed up for B-School because we wanted to reach as many people as we could. Empowerment was our thing—whether the medium was a magazine or the cosmos. We figured if a couple thousand people were enjoying our writing, why not a few hundred thousand…or a few million?
B-School really took our astrology business to a new level. Thanks to what we learned, we have reached those numbers and beyond! A few months after B-School, our mailing list signups doubled and our profits increased by 650 percent(!), all while we did business with integrity and stayed true to our message.
We invite you to explore this amazing and dynamic resource. If you decide to sign up, you can do so through our partnership link, which will give you access to our exclusive B-School Bonus program, which will include a business chart reading with us.
