Enjoy! -Tali & Ophi
This month’s crystal horoscopes teach you how to tap into the openhearted nature of Cancer. By working with the healing powers of crystals and precious gemstones, you can hone the nurturing qualities of the homespun Crab, feather your nest and embrace the divine feminine.
Crystals and Astrology:
Every planet and star sign has corresponding crystals that share their energetic resonance. . Consciously working with crystals and gemstones that correlate with the energy of each astrological season can benefit the mind, body and spirit. As crystals form within the earth, rocks and minerals are in a constant process of transformation: creation, change and dissolution. The zodiac reflects this process from the spark of the birth of Aries (the first sign of the zodiac), the growth through the signs, and the completion and undoing in Pisces (the twelfth sign).
The Cancer Resonance:
This year, the Sun is in Cancer from June 20-July 22, shifting our focus away from the communicative and relationship-oriented ways of Gemini, toward heartfelt Cancer, the zodiac’s Crab and domestic doyenne. Ruled by the tide-pulling moon, Cancer plunges us into an ocean of emotion. The traits of this sensitive sign are nurturance, belonging, and recognizing the connectedness with all that is.
As the first water sign of the zodiac wheel and a trendsetting cardinal sign, Cancer pertains to our emotional and spiritual aspects. While airy, social Gemini said, “I think,” Cancer’s motto is now, “I feel.” Words can be limiting and talk can be cheap, but we can almost always trust our gut feelings about a situation or relationship.
Just as new habits take about a month to become ingrained, working with a crystal for several weeks helps your body to integrate the new vibration in conjunction with the stone. Working with the 28-day moon cycles is ideal, especially for women. Or you could start working with a new stone at the beginning of the month, or the start of a zodiac season—or of course, whenever it feels intuitively right.
Crystals form when liquid magma from the earth’s core moves toward the surface, cools down to solidify, then crystallizes over millions of years.
Moonstone and selenite are the two crystals I recommend for Cancer season, for those with prominent Cancer placements in their natal charts, and for those who want to tap into their Cancerian energy any time of year.
Both moonstone and selenite have a monoclinic crystalline structure, which means that their inner structure is shaped like a parallelogram. Parallelograms are a rectangular shape which appears to be “tipping” to one side, and as such, the energy of monoclinic stones is one of fluidity; almost a state of permanent flux or inconstancy. This resonates with the ebb and flow—the wax and wane of the lunar cycles and the shifting moods of Cancer. Monoclinic crystals bring the lesson of learning to go with the flow, expect the unexpected, and trusting your intuition.
Since Cancer’s planetary ruler is the moon, these stones in particular can also help you to tap into your emotions. Your moon sign indicates your inner function: who you are your deepest, most subconscious level. It is also connected to your relationship with your mother. Whereas the Sun sign is your outer self and who you are learning to be in this lifetime, the moon signifies your natural emotional function. Being aware of and in touch with your lunar energy helps you to act in accordance with your authentic self.
Properties of Healing Crystals
Clearly connected to the evening luminary, moonstone is a primary mineral with an inner laminate structure that bends light. Primary minerals pertain to creation and new beginnings, and with Cancer being a cardinal sign, it is all about initiating fresh starts. As the fourth sign of the zodiac and the first water sign, Cancer ushers us into the realm of emotions. Similarly, moonstone is associated with intuition, feelings, the heart, and fertility—all Cancerian keywords.
This crystal forms in many colors including translucent/white rainbow moonstone, peach/apricot moonstone, and even a dark silver/grey moonstone. It is often opalescent, with a mystical blue or white sheen.
As Cancer rules the stomach and breasts physiologically, moonstone is also a beneficial crystal for women. It is said to enhance fertility, aid with menstrual issues such as PMS or cramping, bring comfort during pregnancy and after childbirth, and assist in milk production for breastfeeding. Moonstone is also said to assist in cooling down the hot sensations of menopause.
Relative to the stomach, moonstone unblocks the lymphatic system and is said to assist the digestive system while balancing the stomach, liver, pancreas and even the pituitary gland. Moonstone also helps alleviate insomnia and provide a more peaceful rest when placed under a pillow as you sleep.
As it forms in long bands and has thermal insulating qualities, selenite wands hold a lot of light and warmth. High grade selenite is semi-translucent white, and looks similar to a long, thin fluorescent light bulb. This crystal’s name is linked to Selene, who is the Greek goddess of the moon.
Similar to moonstone, selenite also pertains to fertility, pregnancy and motherhood. Just like the watery nature of Cancer, selenite is said to help with the the flow of bodily fluids while rejuvenating the cells, protecting from free radicals, and strengthening the bones.
A relatively neutral stone, selenite does not hold negative energy and does not need cleansing, but can be used to clear and charge other crystals and gemstones. Selenite forms in water, but it is a softer mineral that would dissolve if submerged in water.
As Cancer is the feeler of the zodiac, “gut intuitions” are strong. Natives of this sign can be prone to anxiety, ulcers, indigestion, and irritable bowel syndrome, as worrying can manifest as psychosomatic disease. Moonstone helps to soothe the emotions and bring calm.
Moonstone’s light-bending properties help to stimulate the pineal gland, which is the “seat of the soul,” or our inner knowing. The pineal gland is light-sensitive, so working with moonstone is said to help balance our internal hormonal cycles and attune us more to the rhythms of nature.
The light-bending properties of moonstone also work to enhance intuition by refining our subconscious perception of light. Cancer energy inherently wants us to trust our feelings, and moonstone helps us in dream recall in our sleep, and going with the flow during our waking hours.
Cancer as a cardinal sign has a lot of ideas and can be impulsive to make moves based on a feeling. Moonstone helps you to be practical in your dealings and remain emotionally balanced. As a receptive crystal, just as Cancer is a feminine sign, moonstone helps to attract love, abundance, and connect with spirit guides. It opens the gateway to your subconscious and higher self, and amplifies clarity in any divination practices during key moments throughout the moon cycle.
Just like the cycles of the moon, Cancer’s emotional state waxes and wanes. It is said that Cancers are “moody,” but a more effective way to perceive it is as an ebb and flow. The super sensitive Crabs can take on energy from the world around them so easily, so maneuvering between being open and bright (such as at the full moon) and introspective and quiet (such as at the new moon) is necessary for Cancer energy to protect itself.
Selenite is calm and soothing, with a high, clear, and pure vibration. Since selenite does not hold on to negative charges, it is a fantastic crystal to use to neutralize your own energy. Believed to be crystallized divine light, selenite protects your mind from wandering and getting lost in the Cancerian ocean, which can be confusing.
A safe and secure home center is tantamount to Cancer energy feeling nurtured. Selenite is often used to make a protective energetic grid around your house or workspace: place four pieces of selenite inside at the four corners of your home (or your bedroom, or office space), and a piece of black tourmaline near your main entrance. For personal protection, passing a selenite wand around your body to provide auric shielding from lower vibrating energies.
How to Cleanse and Program Crystals
Crystals are largely comprised of silicon dioxide (SiO2), which is the material used in watches for timekeeping and silicon computer memory chips for storing large quantities of information. Thus, crystals are inherently programmable, and you can set your intentions for what you would like to work through with your stone.
Before working with any crystal, it’s a good practice to smudge (or energetically cleanse) the stone by passing it through the smoke of a purifying type of incense such as white sage, Palo Santo, or frankincense and myrrh. Just as white sage is used to bless and clear a new home, smudging crystals neutralizes any previous energetic imprints in the stone.
To program your crystal, sit upright comfortably with your stone in your left hand, and place your right hand over the crystal. Take three deep breaths with the intention of attuning with the crystal’s vibration, and state your intentions either in your head, or spoken aloud. Sample intentions are offered below.
Meditation, Intentions and Affirmations with Crystals for Cancer Season
Meditating with crystals during Cancer season can help us attune to our heart, nurture our familial bonds and navigate the waters of the emotion ocean.
I recommend writing down the affirmations below with pen on paper, keeping them beside you as you meditate. Feel free to add your own Cancer themes as you see fit. If you find it challenging to quiet your thoughts as you sit in silence, there are many meditation apps available, such as the Calm app or Headspace. Or, you can search for crystal singing bowl meditation tones or binaural beats on YouTube such as these:

Cancer Season New & Full Moon Rituals:
Moonstone at the New Moon
The new moon is dark, and a time where your consciousness is fertile for planting seeds of creation. At the new moon, take a moment to reflect on the fresh intentions you desire to set for the start of the lunar cycle.
With ink and a piece of parchment paper or a notecard, write down what it is you desire to cultivate for yourself. Cancer asks: What do you NEED? Get clear on not only your desires, but your base needs, especially as they pertain to love and nurturing, connectedness, and your foundations of home. What baggage are you carrying from childhood that needs to be integrated? What do you need to feel safe and secure in your present home life? What do you actually desire in partnership? List it all.
After you have brainstormed about your deepest needs, lie down for meditation. Place a piece of moonstone on your forehead to stimulate your pineal gland/third eye chakra, as this will enhance your connection to your higher self.
Breathe slowly and deeply for at least 10 minutes to give your mind the opportunity to slow down, but don’t worry if you still have distracting thoughts. Simply focus on your breath, and visualize what it is you desire to manifest over the next 28 days.
Over the following two weeks as the moon waxes to grow larger, continue to focus on drawing that which you desire to yourself, and taking on the qualities, which will propel you toward your higher purpose.
Selenite at the Full Moon
The full moon is bright, and a time to focus on gratitude for what it is you’ve cultivated, and begin to release that which no longer serves you.
In the three days before the full moon is exact, cleanse and charge your other crystals by placing them on top of or alongside your selenite near a window that receives the light of the moon.
On the evening of the full moon itself, make a gratitude list of that which you are thankful for creating. That night, sleep with selenite under your pillow, or if you sleep on your back, you can even place the selenite wand over your stomach or your heart area. This helps to infuse the illuminating light of lunar wisdom into your emotional body as you sleep.
Over the following two weeks as the moon wanes to become smaller, think about what you recognize as unnecessary in your life, and meditate upon that which you can begin to release, or behaviors you can shift in order to let go of your personal baggage and live more authentically.
As you move through the complexity of your heart’s emotions during Cancer season, try to remember that compassion toward yourself is just as important as compassion toward others. Remember the presence of your spiritual self, and know that you can always trust in the universe.
