We’re excited to bring you our monthly Crystal Horoscopes column by spiritually savvy and dynamic Gemini, Chartreuse Tembo Barriere, founder and headMIZtress of The Venus Academy. Each month she will bring us tips on how to use crystals and gemstones for the astrological season, so we can stay aligned and in tune with the energy of both the heavens and the Earth. Enjoy! -Tali & Ophi
This month’s crystal horoscopes teach you how to tap into the hardworking, persistent qualities of Aries. By working with the healing powers of crystals and precious gemstones, you can connect with your highest self and move forward boldly in the direction of your dreams.
Crystals and Astrology:
Every planet and star sign has corresponding crystals that share their energetic resonance. Think of it this way: The planets are massive, heavenly rocks that influence the energy fields on Earth, while crystals are massive, inner-earth rocks that can also influence our bodies here on the Earth’s surface. In other words, just as the big planetary rocks in the heavens are an astrological macrocosm of our lives, the rocks below us in the earth are a microcosm of our experience. Consciously working with crystals and gemstones that correlate with the energy of each astrological season can benefit the mind, body and spirit.
As crystals form within the earth, rocks and minerals are in a constant process of transformation: creation, change and dissolution. The zodiac reflects this process from the spark of the birth of Aries (the first sign of the zodiac), the growth through the signs, and the completion and undoing in Pisces (the twelfth sign).
The Aries Resonance:
This year, the Sun is in Aries March 20-April 19, shifting our focus away from the healing, compassionate and intuitive nature of Pisces, shifting our attention from internal to external. Assertive Aries is the star sign individuality and fearlessness, helping us to be bold and motivated trendsetters and trailblazers.
Aries can often possess a ‘me first’ attitude. As the first sign of the zodiac wheel, we begin the circle of life once again during Aries season. Ruled by warrior Mars, this cardinal fire sign coincides with the start of spring and the vernal equinox. As the rebirth portal of the astrological new year, key themes for the season of #LevelUp include: Reflection. New Year. Passover. Release. Crucifixion. Resurrection. Rebirth. New life. Fresh starts. Warrior spirit. Forward motion.
Cardinal signs are the leadership-driven initiators of the zodiac, and are often very independent. Aries energy is inspiring and heroic, and they are known for spontaneous combustion if they bottle up their emotions for too long. As the sign symbolized by the persistent Ram, Aries rules the head and neck in the body.
Just as new habits take about a month to become ingrained, working with a crystal for several weeks helps your body to integrate the new vibration in conjunction with the stone. Working with the 28-day moon cycles is ideal, especially for women. Or you could start working with a new stone at the beginning of the month, or the start of a zodiac season—or of course, whenever it feels intuitively right
Crystals form when liquid magma from the earth’s core moves toward the surface, cools down to solidify, then crystallizes over millions of years.
Carnelian and bloodstone are the two powerful crystals I recommend for the Mars-ruled sign. These crystals resonate with all those born during Aries season, those with strong Aries energy in their charts, or anyone who wants to tap into that cardinal fire energy now, or at any time of year.
Properties of Healing Crystals
After precious gem birthstones ruby and diamond, carnelian is one of the next best crystals for Aries energy. Aries does not suffer fools gladly, and will go to bat for what it feels is right in an instant. Carnelian is a great stone for protection, since the fiery Ram energy can find Aries in a hotbed of drama due to its impulsive nature.
Carnelian is a reddish orange crystal with a trigonal mineral structure, and is a member of the quartz family. As a primary mineral, carnelian pertains to new beginnings, self-discovery, and learning processes. Aries being the cardinal fire sign, is all about sparking new life, taking initiative, and standing in the power of “I Am,” hence its resonance with carnelian. Both pertain to the root chakra, which gives us our sense of grounding and stability on this earth plane.
Used as for its blood-staunching and anger-calming effect in the Middle Ages, carnelian resonates wonderfully for Mars-ruled Aries in this way. It is said to ensure good blood supply to the organs and tissues, and can assist in alleviating rheumatism while stimulating the absorption of vitamins, nutrients and minerals. All of these qualities are aligned with the Aries directive to activate the life force energy!
Aries natives are fire starters and warrior spirits, and bloodstone is the perfect accompaniment to these themes of power and sacrifice. Another term for bloodstone is “heliotrope,” which is the Greek word for “solstice,” which brings more of our cosmic dynamics of the relationship between the Sun and Earth into play.
Bloodstone is a unique quartz-based mineral that is like a hybrid of chalcedony and jasper. It is green with iron silicate inclusions that look like red blood spots with specks of yellow. As a secondary mineral, it is formed naturally and then was influenced by environmental factors to transform into its current state. Physically, bloodstone is said to assist in boosting the immune system while stimulating the metabolic process. It is also said to help detox the body and reduce inflammations, particularly when worn on the body.
Impulsive Aries’ challenge is thinking before acting, so working with bloodstone can help with exactly that. It can help temper the headstrong, abrasive nature of Aries energy into productive, peaceful cooperation
The cardinal modality of Aries takes tremendous initiative—it sparks ideas and sets things into motion, but can have trouble in the sustaining part or the follow through.
Metaphysically, carnelian is the stone of creativity, providing the necessary grounding and organization to feel more in control of your life as the captain of your own ship. It has a purifying effect, and can be stored with tarot or oracle cards to neutralize the deck in between uses.
By assisting the practitioner with a solid knowing of their inherent self-worth, carnelian helps to stimulate courage while tempering aggression. Carnelian encourages problem solving quickly and pragmatically, while helping to bring actions to a proper conclusion once they are begun.
For Aries energy, this may look like figuring out how to form a village of support, or delegate duties to the proper people. You don’t have to do everything yourself, and the creative function of carnelian can help you get still and listen so you can recognize the next best move.
Metaphysically, secondary minerals such as bloodstone pertain to transforming through nurturance and the environment.
Fun fact: “ovis aries” is the scientific term for the domestic sheep. A baby sheep is a lamb, and the adult male sheep is called a ram, which is the Aries symbol. Fittingly, cardinal fire Aries season is when we see the themes of the sacrificial lamb, rebirth, and liberation play out in our daily lives.
Blood is life force energy which carries tremendous elemental power. Many African traditional religions and indigenous rituals incorporate some aspect of blood sacrifice as a tool to connect with the divine energy of the Creator and the Orishas, or ancestral deities.
Aries season holidays include the Hebrew Pesach, or Passover; originating from the time of the Egyptian plagues where the Israelites smeared the blood of a spring sacrificial lamb on their doorposts in order to avoid having to sacrifice their first born children.
Then the story of Christ’s death and resurrection also tells the story of blood sacrifice. Medieval Christians are said to have believed that bloodstone formed from Christ’s blood staining green jasper at the foot of the cross, and bloodstone was historically used to carve scenes of the crucifixion. Every year, Easter takes place on the first Sunday after the first Full Moon after the spring Equinox, which is the first day of Aries season. Everything relates to the cosmos!
Just as the symbolic bloodletting of traditional spiritual rituals, bloodstone is spiritually useful in helping us to protect ourselves, and limit undesirable influences from both external bullies or our own undoing through the mental tailspin. Bloodstone strengthens self-confidence and provides insight through intuition and trusting the knowledge of your higher self through the “I Am” principle. It also helps to calm irritability, aggressiveness and impatience, which are definite shadow keywords for Aries energy.
Connecting both the root and heart chakras, metaphysically, bloodstone’s message is Be Here Now—a simple but poignant reminder that being in the present moment is the best way to alleviate anxiety about the future.
How to Cleanse and Program Crystals
Crystals are largely comprised of silicon dioxide (SiO2), which is the material used in watches for timekeeping and silicon computer memory chips for storing large quantities of information. Thus, crystals are inherently programmable, and you can set your intentions for what you would like to work through with your stone.
Before working with any crystal, it’s a good practice to smudge (or energetically cleanse ) the stone by passing it through the smoke of a purifying type of incense such as white sage, Palo Santo, or frankincense and myrrh. Just as white sage is used to bless and clear a new home, smudging crystals neutralizes any previous energetic imprints in the stone.
To program your crystal, sit upright comfortably with your stone in your left hand, and place your right hand over the crystal. Take three deep breaths with the intention of attuning with the crystal’s vibration, and state your intentions either in your head, or spoken aloud. Sample intentions are offered below.
Meditating with crystals during Aries season can help us establish a healthy relationship to our ego. Since we are more prone to pent up anger, frustration and even bouts of rage during Aries season, meditation and yoga are powerful tools that can help us channel those negative emotions into something more productive. To make meditation a daily habit, start by spending five to ten minutes each morning focusing on your breath and working with these Aries-themed intentions and affirmations for your meditation practice.
I recommend writing down the affirmations below with pen on paper, keeping them beside you as you meditate. Feel free to add your own Aries themes as you see fit. If you find it challenging to quiet your thoughts as you sit in silence, there are many meditation apps available, such as the Calm app or Headspace. Or, you can search for crystal singing bowl meditation tones or binaural beats on YouTube such as these:

Ritual: Examining your “I AM” through shadow integration
Aries is all about the self, and there’s no better way to understand yourself than by examining your Aries placement, planets in Aries, and the energetic signature of the first house in your natal chart. My book is called the Yoni Egg Shadow Integration Workbook: Your 28-day Astrological Guide through the Womb Wellness Journey. It is an interactive workbook that asks you to show up and do the introspective work. It is geared toward women, but can be used by anyone interested in how astrology, the chakras, crystal energy, dream journaling, sound healing, and meditation are all useful in #DecodingTheAll.
As Aries is the launchpad of the zodiac wheel, my workbook begins by guiding you through examining your own Aries/Mars energy and that of your 1st House, as well as asking you introspective questions about your root chakra.
The following are some questions from the YES I Workbook to answer in your own journaling:
What planets do you have in Aries? What do they symbolize?
Do you have any planets in your first house? If so, what do they symbolize?
What house does Aries rule in your natal chart? What is this house focused on?
How resourceful do you feel in handling life’s challenges (whether they are financial, health-related, job-related, etc.)?
In what areas do you struggle with insecurity? Everyone has them.
Do you ever experience feelings of paranoia? Under what circumstances?
How often do you feel comfortable; at peace in your home life? How do those around you show support?
You can order The Yoni Egg Shadow Integration Workbook as a 7-day PDF download or the full 28-day paperback at my website, AgeOfEleven.com.
Intention: May I find freedom from the past.
I recognize toxic ancestral patterns.
I embrace my spiritual warrior nature.
I detoxify to experience true transmutation.
I cooperate with others and welcome assistance.
I release self-absorption and ego-centric mental blocks.
I acknowledge my mistakes to do better as I know better.
I validate myself through knowing my divine, inherent worthiness.
Ritual: Peaceful Warrior meditations
As Aries rules the head, when our fiery Aries energy becomes extra heated, it can result in restless thoughts, insomnia, or even migraines. Meditation and breath work are essential for inner peace.
As non-toxic crystal members of the quartz family, both bloodstone and carnelian can also be worn directly on the skin for extended periods of time, or even used in creating crystalline gem elixirs suitable for ingestion. You can also incorporate clear quartz crystal into your meditations below with the Aries stones.
Daily morning ‘peaceful warrior’ meditation techniques:
Bloodstone: Hold a piece of bloodstone for 15 minutes in the morning while focusing on deep breathing. This can help cultivate selflessness and a reconnection to your innate resources of courage and initiative in a productive way. For direct impact on your head, mental state, and third eye chakra, you can lie down and place the crystal on your forehead between your brows.
Carnelian: Light a candle to invoke the fire element native to Aries. Pass your carnelian over the flame to cleanse and purify it, then sit upright and place the crystal in your lap or on the ground near your root chakra. With each deep breath, visualize a sacred flame growing from the crystal and enlarging to envelop your body with revitalizing energy. Envision the fire of protection filling your entire auric field, and carry that peaceful warrior energy with you throughout your day.
