We’re excited to bring you our monthly Crystal Horoscopes column by spiritually savvy and dynamic Gemini, Chartreuse Tembo Barriere, founder and headMIZtress of The Venus Academy. Each month she will bring us tips on how to use crystals and gemstones for the astrological season, so we can stay aligned and in tune with the energy of both the heavens and the Earth. Enjoy! -Tali & Ophi
This month’s crystal horoscopes teach you how to tap into the expansive and abundant energy of Sagittarius. By working with the healing powers of crystals and precious gemstones, you will move boldly into the direction of your most cherished dreams.
Crystals and Astrology:
Every planet and star sign has corresponding crystals that share their energetic resonance. Think of it this way: The planets are massive, heavenly rocks that influence the energy fields on Earth, while crystals are massive, inner-earth rocks that can also influence our bodies here on the Earth’s surface. In other words, just as the big planetary rocks in the heavens are an astrological macrocosm of our lives, the rocks below us in the earth are a microcosm of our experience. Consciously working with crystals and gemstones that correlate with the energy of each astrological season can benefit the mind, body and spirit.
As crystals form within the earth, rocks and minerals are in a constant process of transformation: creation, change and dissolution. The zodiac reflects this process from the spark of the birth of Aries (the first sign of the zodiac), the growth through the signs, and the completion and undoing in Pisces (the twelfth sign).
The Sagittarius Resonance:
Sagittarius is the star sign of the quest for higher truth. It relates to our journeys and philosophies, representing the embodiment of freedom. Physiologically, Sagittarius is associated with the hips and with the liver, and is symbolically represented by the Archer.
Sagittarius in the ninth sign of the zodiac wheel; opposite to Gemini, the third sign. Opposing signs can tend to pertain to the same relative areas of life, but do take on differing approaches. The Sagittarius-Gemini opposition is the “axis of the mind.” Sag takes Gem’s exploration and info-gathering and expands upon it—implementing the ideas; perfecting the theories in practice.
Now that we’ve experienced transformation and alchemy—the death of the ego via Scorpio season—now is the time to rebuild and reframe just what our higher mind is. The zodiac glyph for Sagittarius depicts an arrow aiming higher. It is the only sign represented by the half human, half animal centaur, which combines our basic animal instincts with activating the “god” consciousness within each of us.
When it comes to crystals and the zodiac, our human lives undergo very similar processes as rocks and minerals and the zodiac archetypes. As always: as above, so below.
Just as new habits take about a month to become ingrained, working with a crystal for several weeks helps your body to integrate the new vibration in conjunction with the stone. Working with the 28-day moon cycles is ideal, especially for women. Or you could start working with a new stone at the beginning of the month, or the start of a zodiac season—or of course, whenever it feels intuitively right.
Healing Crystals for Sagittarius Season (November 22-December 21)
Crystals form when liquid magma from the earth’s core moves toward the surface, cools down to solidify, then crystallizes over millions of years.
Pyrite and lapis Lazuli are the two crystals I recommend for Sagittarius season, for those with strong Sagittarius or Jupiter influence in their natal charts, and for those who want to tap into Sagittarian energy any time of year. Both of these crystals are of the cubic molecular structure. As the shape suggests, cubic crystals provide structure and organization while promoting creativity and clarity. They also both are of the tertiary, or metamorphic mineral formation, which is my favorite process—transformation under extreme pressure.
Properties of Healing Crystals
Yellow and gold-colored minerals bring brightness into our lives, just like the bold Sun. Pyrite provides an enlivening, cheering effect when placed strategically in a room or worn as a piece of jewelry.
Fiery pyrite improves the supply of energy to the body, as well as the nerves that control the inner organs. This mineral also stimulates the activity of the digestive and immune systems. Sagittarius rules the liver and hips, and as and the winter (and holiday) season can do a number on our health, working with this stone during this time is great for purification and detoxification.
Pyrite’s fiery, energetic nature helps the user to overcome depression and can lend self-confidence, which are important to strive for especially as Sagittarius ushers us into the darker winter season in the northern hemisphere. Physically, pyrite also can bring a surge of energy to recognizing the underlying causes of dis-ease. The metallic brightness of the mineral, especially when pyrite is in sunburst form, has a pain-alleviating effect—particularly when laid on the lower abdomen near your liver during meditation.
As mentioned above, pyrite’s mineral formation is of the cubic molecular structure. Like square building blocks, all cubic minerals are useful for structure and building, both metaphysically and in the tangible world. On a mental level, pyrite clarifies the causes of life’s circumstances and helps us to see the bigger, brighter picture, just as the Sagittarius Archer calls for us to aim higher and integrate the whole. Working with pyrite helps us to develop spiritual maturity as we decode the meaning of our own existence.
Lapis lazuli is a cubic, tertiary mineral, formed during the metamorphosis of chalk into marble. When iron is present during the transformation process, gold-colored pyrite inclusions occur. Its name comes from the Persian word “lazur,” which translates to “blue stone,” and in ancient Africa and the Mesopotamia region, lapis was the “stone of rulers” and used for metaphysical ritual purposes. It was even crushed to make blue eye makeup.
Sagittarius is a mutable fire sign, and it’s energy is very powerful. Working with this blue mineral imparts a necessary cooling, calming effect. Since Sagittarius rules the liver, lapis lazuli is also beneficial as it helps regulate the balance of liquids, hormones, pH levels, and mineral-forming elements in the body. Blue minerals help activate elimination and the movement of bodily fluids, which is also a major function of the liver. And while lapis helps facilitate a natural balanced flow, the mineral itself contains gold-flecks of pyrite, incorporating the Sagittarius fire.
Pyrite is naturally associated with the element of fire. Its name means “fire stone;” it creates sparks when struck and was supposedly used to create fires in the Stone Ages. Sagittarius is Mutable Fire. Mutable energy is all about transforming, so Sag is the embodiment of transformation through fire, or alchemy.
Alchemy is the ancient practice of transmuting lower dross metals into gold, but metaphysically and practically, alchemy is simply about making the best of your situation, whatever it is. Pyrite is colloquially known as “fool’s gold,” because it looks similar, but is much more brittle and has a cubic molecular structure.
As a cubic stone, lapis lazuli helps us to see our own life patterns as part of a higher structure, which is exactly what Sagittarius does when it integrates Gemini duality into a unified bigger picture. Sagittarius wants to take us to the highest heights. Its place is at the top of the zodiac wheel in the 9th house, right before we activate our midheaven/10th house of public platforms and careers.
Lapis lazuli is the stone of royalty, and there’s nothing like the archetype of monarchy to symbolize being on top. Sagittarius and its Jupiter-ruled energy desire that we expand and liberate ourselves, and lapis lazuli does just that. It helps us to be the rulers of our own spiritual kingdoms, and is the stone of friendship, wisdom and honesty. It encourages self-awareness, and helps us to face hard truths while also expressing our own opinions.
The beautiful blue lapis lazuli encourages striving for knowledge and the search for truth, which is the Sagittarian way. On the mental plane, lapis lazuli accelerates instinctive reactions, keeps things moving forward, and helps us to overcome fear and take courage. This resonates strongly with the true mutable function of transformative Sagittarius energy.
How to Cleanse and Program Crystals
Crystals are largely comprised of silicon dioxide (SiO2), which is the material used in watches for timekeeping and silicon computer memory chips for storing large quantities of information. Thus, crystals are inherently programmable, and you can set your intentions for what you would like to work through with your stone.
Before working with any crystal, you want to smudge—energetically cleanse—the stone by passing it through the smoke of a purifying type of incense such as white sage, Palo Santo, or frankincense and myrrh. Just as white sage is used to energetically cleanse a new home, smudging crystals neutralizes any previous energetic imprints in the stone.
To program your crystal, sit upright comfortably with your stone in your left hand, and place your right hand over the crystal. Take three deep breaths with the intention of attuning with the crystal’s vibration, and state your intentions either in your head, or spoken aloud. Sample intentions are offered below.
Meditation, Intentions and Affirmations with Crystals for Sagittarius Season
It’s quite fitting that Sagittarius season follows Scorpio, because we could all use some lifting up from the depths after journeying through the underworld. We’ve crossed spiritual thresholds, danced in the dark, come face to face with our shadows, and now we know firsthand what it is to burn. In fact, many of us are still blazing—for better or worse. But Sagittarius is mutable fire; the flame that doesn’t just spark like Aries or hold steady like Leo, but the fire that transforms.
Meditating with crystals during Sagittarius season can help us stoke the flames of our deepest desires and move confidently in the direction of our dreams. To make meditation a daily habit, start by spending five to ten minutes each morning focusing on your breath and working with these Sagittarius-themed intentions and affirmations for your meditation practice.
I recommend writing down the affirmations below with pen on paper and keeping them next to you as you meditate. Feel free to add your own Sagittarius themes as you see fit. If you find it challenging to quiet your thoughts as you sit in silence, there are many meditation apps available, such as Calm app or Headspace. Or, you can search for crystal singing bowl meditation tones or binaural beats on YouTube such as these:

Sagittarius encompasses the quest for higher truth, and on the emotional level, pyrite uncovers our secrets and subconscious memories that have been suppressed. Sag natives are some of the most truthful, sharp-shooting purveyors of that honesty, and working concertedly with pyrite provides an opportunity for more openness and bigger picture truthfulness. Pyrite encourages self-realization and the dismantling of illusions, just as the archer desires for us. This mystical stone confronts us with our own character so we can see, without judgment, the beneficial and detrimental sides of our own being.
Intention: May I spark my next level of transformation and forge through the fire.
I am the light of the world.
I activate my regeneration.
I aim toward seeing higher truth.
I observe the power of self-awareness.
I ascend to spiritual maturity and healing.
I trust each experience is for my highest good.
Meditation Technique: Golden Flame
To tap into the energy of Sagittarius, meditate with a single candle: it can be as small as a tea light or as large as a 7-day candle, as long as you have a flame.
Sit upright in front of the candle flame; even better if you can place it at eye level. Hold your pyrite in your left hand and a piece of clear quartz crystal in your right hand for stabilization. Gaze directly at the candle flame and breathe slowly and deeply for five counts. Feel the vibration of light emanating from the pyrite, into your hands and energizing every cell in your body. Envision the light vibration expanding from your sacral chakra in your lower abdomen, extending out to your auric field and beyond, creating a force field all around you. Continue deep breathing and gazing at the candle, looking into and beyond the flame and allowing the fire elemental spirit to commune with you.
Repeat this meditation nightly, or whenever intuitively desired, for ten minutes or more.
Lapis lazuli resonates with the throat chakra of clear self-expression. Its healing properties are also Sagittarian, in that it can assist in problems with the neck, larynx and vocal chords, particularly if those issues stem from suppressing emotions or repressing anger. Physically, lapis lazuli is also said to physically lower blood pressure when used continuously in meditation, and regulate the thyroid and the menstrual cycle. As always, the work must be consistent and your introspection must be thorough. My book, for instance, is all about shadow integration, and is a workbook that can help structure the inner work process as you reflect.
Intention: May I perceive my true essence to be one with higher universal truth.
I see the bigger picture.
I am worthy because I exist.
I perceive with the mind of the divine.
I am at one with the universe.
I decode beyond the veil of binary limitations.
I activate and practice my gifts in service to the world.
Meditation Technique: Mindfulness Meditation
Mutable fire transforms the hardest dross minerals into gold, but not before putting the subject through extreme pressure and causing it to undergo severe testing. This is the alchemical process.
On its quest for higher truth, Sagittarius pertains to long journeys and wandering. As the opposite sign to butterfly Gemini, Sagittarius is the bird’s eye. Dualistic Gemini Twins see both sides of any situation; integrative Sagittarius—half-human, half horse—finds the unifying thread and helps us to recognize the ONEness in everyday life.
To harness the Centaur’s mutable magic, practice mindfulness meditation during Sagittarius season. Mindfulness meditation is simply the art of observing your wandering thoughts as they float through your mind. The ego, which is the aspect of you that perceives separation, has a tendency to judge things, people, or occurrences as good/bad, right/wrong, better/worse. That Gemini polarity is exactly the type of mental construct which Sagittarius is able to synthesize on the axis of the mind.
As you move throughout your day, any time you want to tap into Sagittarius energy, make a concerted effort to not judge any experiences or presentations as good or bad. Simply acknowledge them just as they are.
Life is not “either/or,” it’s “both/and.” Everything is possible.
