Emerge from the depths—outgoing Sagittarius season is here! The Sun is in this worldly and expansive sign from November 22-December 21, 2018, putting our collective focus on global connections, inspiration and making our voices heard.
Raise your hand if you’re ready for some holiday cheer! The festivities of Sagittarius season arrive with extra fanfare this year. As the star sign of the courageous, worldly Archer, high-minded Sagittarius reminds us of all the endless possibilities; that life is still worth celebrating—even amidst hope-crushing headlines. What’s more, is boundless Jupiter, the galactic guardian of Sagittarius, made a major move earlier this month on November 8, returning to its home sign for a 13-month stay. Bring on the positive thinking and limitless possibilities! A spirit of adventure overtakes us in a big way—and what a refreshing change! After the red spotted planet’s tenure in laser-focused, myopic Scorpio, our viewfinders become adjusted to a broadminded, wide-angle lens.
Every 30 days or so, the Sun visits a new zodiac sign. During this “season” everyone feels the energy of this prevailing astrological energy, no matter what your Sun sign. Sagittarius is the second of the zodiac’s three fire signs and part of the “mutable” quality (or triplicity). Mutable signs (the others are Gemini, Virgo and Pisces) are all about change and variety. These spontaneous souls may not make long-range plans, but you can call them up for an impromptu coffee or karaoke outing, and they’ll be there with bells on. They are natural editors and critics, gifted at refining what the other zodiac signs create and perfecting the final product. Mutable signs are flexible and adaptable—and we could all use some of this energy right about now!
As the intensity of Scorpio season comes to a close, we emerge from the chrysalis transformed, inside and out. Have you been hibernating alone or with a sexy plus-one for the past month? Come out, come out wherever you are! And when you do, buy yourself a bus ticket, overseas flight or a tank of gas for a road trip. “Anywhere but home” always seems like the ideal destination for Sagittarius season. When GPS coordinates are set at “mi casa,” set the table for an array of out-of-town guests and a diversified friend group. ‘Tis the astrological season for mingling with a wide-open heart and door.
Here are five ways you can tap into the Sagittarius season spirit and channel its fiery courage between now and December 21.
1. Find your optimism (but don’t be naïve).
Sagittarius is the zodiac’s eternal optimist—and we could all use some glass-half-full perspective now. In fact, studies have shown that positive thinking correlates to well-being, and helps us to lead richer, more fulfilling lives, in general. After an intense and tunnel-vision Scorpio season, this new monthlong cycle grants us the ability to step back and look at things from a wide-angle setting. Philosophical Sagittarius helps us reflect, step into other people’s shoes, and look at the big picture. A word of warning: This does NOT mean putting a shiny coat of BS over reality. Sagittarius is the fiery truth-teller who dares to keep it real. During Sagittarius season, we’re all encouraged to call it as we see it. The truth shall us free.
2. Employ humor as your superpower.
It can be hard to muster a chuckle during these turbulent times. But without laughter, we can’t connect to our own life force energy. Sagittarius is the master of the pun, seeing the divine comedy in life, and using humor as a catalyst for activism. According to Psychology Today, humor is even a powerful tool for dealing with things like death, terminal illness and grief: “Research has shown that laughter strengthens our immune system, improves alertness, increases endorphin levels, lowers blood pressure, increases the production of T-cells and helps the pituitary gland release its own pain-suppressing opiates.”
So…give yourself permission to let out a side-splitting howl or point out the divine comedy in life. Without levity, it’s hard to maintain perspective.
3. Be more of a critical thinker.
Sagittarius rules publishing, and Sagittarius season is prime time to build a platform to spread a positive message. This month, sharpen your “media literacy” and help advocate the spread of it. We can’t stem the tide of information in the digital age—but we CAN learn to read and digest it critically. The power of the pen (and pixel) goes both ways—so remember to post and consume mindfully during Sagittarius season.
4. Mobilize AND globalize.
We live in a diverse world, and multicultural ambassador Sagittarius is here to remind us of that. Planning travel? Go see how other cultures live, making sure you veer off the tourist-y path and into real civilian areas. (And hey, there are still plenty of disaster-stricken areas that need help if you’re feeling that call.) In a year of attempted travel bans and xenophobic headlines, we need to connect as humans more than ever. We may come from different backgrounds and beliefs, but a shared desire to live freely as ourselves ignites the human spirit. During Sagittarius season, put a few destinations on your bucket list and start researching. (Caveat! Messenger planet Mercury is retrograde in the outspoken Archer’s court from November 16-December 6, 2018, making the next couple weeks a tricky time for travel, so schedule your pre-holiday jaunts around those dates if you can!)
5. Practice what you preach.
One downside of Sagittarius? It can be all talk, no action. So let’s not stand up on our fiery soapboxes and forget to LIVE what we’re saying, too. Change begins with us. Speak out and challenge racist, sexist and discriminatory remarks, even (and especially) ones said cluelessly by “nice” people. Yes, we know this is uncomfortable—especially since we all wish the holidays could bring some peace at last.
Tip: You COULD declare some spaces (like the festive dinner table) a politics-free zone. But the personal is political, so come prepared. During Sagittarius season, there’s a chance to create dialogue and step into other people’s shoes. Here’s hoping this month will turn talk into positive action.
