In our monthly Crystal Horoscope column, spiritually savvy Gemini Chartreuse Tembo Barriere—who is the founder and headMIZtress of The Venus Academy —selects the most powerful stones for the solar season. She teaches us how to use crystals in meditation to stay aligned with the energy of both the heavens and the Earth.
Tap into the efficient nature of Virgo. By working with the healing powers of crystals and precious gemstones, you can hone the purifying qualities of the Virgin and embrace your inner perfectionist.
The Virgo Resonance:
This year, the Sun is in Virgo from August 23-September 22, 2018, marking the end of summer and the sixth stage of human evolution. The preceding sign Leo helps us to develop who we are as individuals; Virgo calls us to figure out how we can serve and wants us to perfect our gifts.
Virgo is ruled by the planet Mercury, and as a mutable sign, it is the conclusion of the summer season in the northern hemisphere. The mutable modality of Virgo is about completion and transition, and this sign in particular has a ceaseless drive to accomplish and perfect.
The airy other Mercury-ruled mutable sign Gemini may not care so much about specifics and the “hows” of life, preferring to flow with the wind. Earthy Virgo, however, is highly concerned with the details, and the ability to be impeccable in word, thought, and deed—even when no one is watching. The earth element of Virgo is expressed through exquisite demonstration of dedication and determination.
Just as new habits take about a month to become ingrained, working with a crystal for several weeks helps your body to integrate the new vibration in conjunction with the stone. Working with the 28-day moon cycles is ideal, especially for women. Or you could start working with a new stone at the beginning of the month, or the start of a zodiac season—or of course, whenever it feels intuitively right.
Crystals form when liquid magma from the earth’s core moves toward the surface, cools down to solidify, then crystallizes over millions of years.
Peridot and moss agate are the two crystals I recommend for Virgo season, for those with prominent Virgo placements in their natal charts, and for those who want to tap into their Virgoan energy any time of year. Peridot is a rhombic crystal of primary formation. It forms deep within the earth and comes to the surface via rising magma during volcanic eruptions, so it is all about transforming through the fire. Moss agate is a trigonal crystal of secondary formation, and part of the quartz family of chalcedony. It enhances one’s love for nature due to its plant-like signature, and as all agates do, it encourages clear communication and mental clarity from spiritual blockages.
Properties of Healing Crystals
The classic birthstone for Virgo is peridot, a rich green gemstone that sometimes features golden undertones. It is quite mercurial in that it has several manifestations and names based on the amount of iron present in the mineral, which lends itself to this crystal’s varying hues. The more olive-colored ones are called olivine, the yellower stones are called chrysolite, and the spring green specimens are what is popularly known as peridot proper.
Physiologically, Virgo is associated with the nervous system, intestines, and spleen. Being that Virgo is so meticulous, anxieties and tensions are often felt acutely in the gut. The rich green earthy healing energy of peridot is an appropriate tool for such feelings—the crystal works well with strengthening the digestive tract, calming nerves and balancing the glandular system. Peridot is also said to be helpful during childbirth to assist in making contractions more productive.
As a child of Mercury, Virgo is also communicative, even while being grounded. The energy of this sign understands psychosomatic disease, but can also find itself in a mental tailspin due to its nature to want to perfect all processes. Peridot is a stress-reducer and helps Virgo to be more productive in the thought process while alleviating anger, jealousy and the release of old patterning.
The family of agate crystals are all relevant to messenger Mercury, as agates are particularly beneficial for mental stimulation and clarity. With Virgo being the earth manifestation of Mercury, moss agate is a wonderful tool for the energy of this sign.
Moss agate is a complex green stone with many variations in appearance. Mostly, it looks like the fossilized essence of a grassy, mossy garden or forest. It can feature many combinations of deep green, yellow, brown, and even blue, formed together in mystical bands, “eyes,” swirls, and layers. It is a gentle crystal which grounds the user down to earth and brings a softening and nurturing presence.
Virgo’s concern over the details can lend itself to criticism, nagging, or a sense of superiority which actually stems from inner feelings of unworthiness. By opening the heart chakra, peridot assists in the release of the debilitating aspects of perfectionism and other growth-blocking habits. The rich, vibrant green hues of peridot resonate directly with the heart center to bring clarity, growth, and openness, which are qualities Virgo energy must cultivate.
Receptive peridot helps one to connect to mother earth and the nurturing essence of Gaia and deities such as Isis and Lakshmi. It is also a stone of friendship and connection, bringing agreeableness and and prosperity instead of contentiousness and judgment. Peridot helps Virgo to let go of the excessively high standards and set reasonable goals.
Peridot also helps attract good fortune, abundance, and prosperity, as well as being a protective stone for the aura. The cleansing nature of peridot helps the user to not be so hard on themselves and others, as Virgo is prone to be. It helps to release old baggage and support the razor-sharp perception of this Mercury-ruled energy.
Virgo’s Mercury influence sometimes lends itself to the native being able to discuss emotions, but not necessarily feel them. Earth-based moss agate brings the gifts of being in touch with one’s feelings to speak from the heart, and not just the mind.
Low-self esteem often manifests in criticism of others, which is a projection that causes internal emotional stress. Moss agate helps you know thyself, and be more aware of your gifts and inherent worthiness as a child of spirit. This assists in reducing the the judgment of self and others.
In addition to stimulating Virgo’s analytical capability, moss agate creates synergy amid the physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual states. It boosts awareness of your positive qualities, and is even beneficial in working toward new goals, particularly those related to your health.
Moss agate also brings protection from danger and brings a calm influence, helping Virgo energy to cool down and even enhance the dream state.

Virgo Season Meditation Techniques and Rituals
Moss Agate & Peridot Grounding Meditation
There are so many ways to meditate—while walking, during yoga, at your altar, in the dark, while facing the Sun. Since Virgo, peridot and moss agate are all so earthy, I suggest an outdoor setting for this particular meditation. You can work with both stones simultaneously, or one or the other.
- Find a quiet, grassy place where you can put your bare feet directly on the earth.
- Touch the moss agate and/or peridot to the ground to cleanse the stones and attune them to the earth. You can sit upright and hold both crystals in your lap, or lay down and place the moss agate at your heart chakra, while holding the peridot in your left hand.
- With closed eyes, breathe deeply to get centered and grounded to your meditation session.
- Picture a cord connecting the moss agate crystal deep into the center of the earth. Picture the peridot as a glowing source of bright green light.
- As you breathe slowly and deeply, visualize a bright surge of protective light rising from deep within the earth, flowing to the crystals, and expanding to surround your entire body.
- Feel the comforting energy of the nurturing mother goddess dissolving all your tensions and fears; releasing everything that is not a representation of your highest self-expression.
- Hold a vision of your deepest desires and how you can best be of service to world. Your higher self already knows your life’s purpose; tune in.
- Picture the ideal manifestation of your wildest dreams, and sit in the energy of knowing that it is yours to create.
- Breathe deeply for at least nine minutes as you sit in the feeling of recognizing that everything you can visualize for yourself is already here and at hand.
- To conclude your meditation session, bring your peridot to the heart center and hold it there for a few moments. Touch your moss agate to the earth once again so that a bit of soil from the ground attaches to the gemstone.
Place the moss agate on place where you will see it often, such as an altar, a fireplace mantle, or even your desk. If you can, wear the peridot as a piece of jewelry or a pocket stone, and keep it close to you for as long as you intuitively desire.
As you move through the complexity of your inner critic during Virgo season, try to remember that compassion toward yourself is just as important as compassion toward others. Remember the presence of your spiritual self, and know that you can always trust in the universe.
