How Saturn in Aquarius Is Reshaping Society and Technology

Saturn hunkers down in communal Aquarius from Saturday, March 21 until July 1—a preview of the cycle that resumes in December until March 2023. This three-year transit is already shaking up technology, society and community. What does the Saturn in Aquarius transit mean in the time of the coronavirus pandemic?

How connected do you feel to your community? As taskmaster Saturn enters Aquarius, the sign of teamwork and innovation, from March 21-July 1, 2020 and again from December 17, 2020-March 7, 2023, it is already challenging the world to find new ways to come together. This is the ringed planet’s first return to Aquarius since January 1994, a year when we were just learning how to incorporate the Internet into our daily lives.

Saturn is the planet of restriction AND restructuring. It’s important to remember that the hard lessons this planet teaches us are always the ones that bring the greatest growth. But as every drill sergeant and pro-level coach knows: No pain, no gain.

And so it goes with Saturn, who we are certain has an iron-fisted hand in this global crisis. As people around the world are mandated to stay inside and restrict our social patterns because of the coronavirus pandemic, we have no choice but to reconsider the value we place on face-to-face, IRL contact. It’s no longer enough to say, “I’m fine, I’m healthy.” Not when a simple errand run could spread a virus to vulnerable parts of our collective population. Saturn in Aquarius insists that we be responsible for our individual impact on the whole community…and world!

Community or cabin fever?

Aquarius is the sign of technology and Saturn here will definitely strengthen the market for apps that allow people to virtually connect, like Slack, Google Hangouts, and HouseParty. We’ve seen an uptick of intergenerational TikTok videos posted by parents on Instagram, trying to make the most of the unplanned school closings. But how long will we REALLY be able to enjoy doing yoga on Zoom? When we had the option to go out and mingle, it seemed fine to just text or WhatsApp. We Instagrammed through brunch and parties instead of giving our undivided attention to the live humans right next to us. As virtual contact becomes restricted, will we learn to appreciate it more? As Saturn has us all in the collective timeout chair, we will have to restructure the way we “do” community.

Already, the lexicon of Saturn in Aquarius words have penetrated the zeitgeist: social distancing, restricted gathering. Even the concepts of curfews and quarantining fall under the reign of Saturn in Aquarius. Saturn is separating us—the opposite of Aquarius’ collaborative nature—but in so doing, people around the world are realizing how much we truly appreciate each other.

We need new structures

Social services like public health and food banks fall under Aquarius and we anticipate a greater strain on these resources with Saturn clamping down. This will be one of the biggest crises to mitigate along with the economy, which falls under Capricorn’s reign. The dearth of coronavirus testing kits in the U.S. is already proof of this. Since Saturn will take one final pass through Capricorn from July 1 to December 17, 2020, government aid for the people who are out of work will be essential.   Unfortunately, many undocumented workers will be left unassisted. Corporations, ruled by Capricorn, may also step in for an assist, but this brings its own set of complications, such as privacy concerns.

Here is where we must all lean into the Saturn in Aquarius call for new community structures. This transit wants no one left behind—and that will take sacrifice, generosity and a willingness to give up some individual privilege, something the Western world has not been accustomed to having to do for quite some years. Humanitarian Aquarius rules the future while sensible Saturn is the master planner and guard. The world could use a large dose of the innovative strategizing this cosmic cycle brings.
