What Mars in Libra/the 7th House Reveals about Your Chart

All about Mars in Libra or in the 7th house

Like a celestial sentry, Mars readies us to fight for what we hold dear. Here’s where you feel passionate, fired up and may have a surplus of energy.

Temper alert! You may find that your fuse is shorter when it comes to this area of life. Or you may run hot and cold. You’re willing to act instinctually instead of deliberately—and sometimes things get messy as a result.

Lusty Mars is the forthright companion to seductive Venus and can bring out the “cosmic caveperson” in us all. Raw desire is directed by Mars, and that includes everything from our sex drive to our professional pursuits. Where there’s smoke there’s fire, so why not build upon that heat? Daring, energetic Mars provides exothermic momentum for our most trailblazing missions.

Natal Mars or Mars Sign

Whatever zodiac sign and house Mars was orbiting through at your time of birth determines your “natal Mars” or “Mars sign.” More specifically, this will guide you in the following ways:

  • Motivation: How driven you are to achieve and what lights your fire
  • Lust: Your passionate instincts and erotic drive
  • Leadership: Where you’ll readily jump in and take charge
  • Fight: What gets you riled up and ready to throw down; how you do battle
  • Initiative: How readily you’ll start a project, relationship, etc.
  • Raw instincts: What makes you move into action without thinking twice

Mars is one of the inner planets, along with Venus and Mercury. Because of its closer proximity to the Sun, it moves through all twelve zodiac signs in 687 days, spending an average of 6-8 weeks in each zodiac sign.

What if the zodiac sign and house are different?

This is common! Read both the sign and house description below. Do these interpretations pull you in two different directions? That’s not unusual. We human beings have range. Astrology is an interpretive dance, a tool which provides a fascinating layer of self-discovery. Do some “astro mixology.” Reflect on how you can work with both energies to enhance your life.

Special positions of Mars

Retrograde

Mars turns retrograde once every two years for a span of approximately two and a half months. It’s not that unusual to be born with this planet in reverse. You may have to work harder to muscle through its lessons, but once you nail this planet’s energy, your additional effort may actually lead to a rock-solid mastery of working with Jupiter in your life.

Domicile: Aries

The planet’s home base, an easy flow if placed here in the chart

Detriment: Libra

Opposite sign of home base, may need to work harder to integrate the planet’s energy if placed here in the chart

Exalted: Capricorn

The planet’s most powerful position; indicates ease and added fortune with using the planet’s energy if placed here in the chart

Fall: Cancer

Opposite sign to the exalted position, can indicate struggles with utilizing the planet’s energy if placed here in the chart

Mars in Libra or the 7th House

Talk about a paradox! Mars is the planet of combat, while Libra and the 7th house are all about harmony. Being born with the Mars in Libra can make you a “peaceful warrior” like (Libra Sun sign) Gandhi who changed the world through the art of passive resistance.

But it can also be challenging to synthesize those two forces: Astrologers say that Mars is “in detriment” in Libra because this zodiac sign is actually opposite on the horoscope wheel from Aries, the sign that Mars rules.

A natural diplomat, Mars in Libra has a gift for creating (and keeping!) the balance in relationships, and planets in the 7th are always concerned for others. You know how to set the tone for love and respect in a powerful way, leading by example or even drafting a mission statement or guidelines for any groups that you’re a part of.

With the  justice-seeking Scales governing your Mars, and the 7th house being the place of contractual agreements, you insist on fairness. If anything can get your temper to flare, it’s inhumane treatment of people or animals. You may, however, have a tendency to suppress your anger, which can be unhealthy and even lead to disease if you don’t unleash it.

Finding healthy outlets to release any pent-up rage should be something you consciously seek as a wellness goal. But since anything that isn’t “beautiful” can make Mars in Libra’s skin crawl, try singing! Belting out a power ballad at karaoke or in your car might be the best outlet—and a calming breath-work exercise, to boot. Partner dancing can also be a great release.

Mars in Libra in love

Having Mars in  Libra or the relationship-oriented 7th house makes you keen to pair off—so much so that you can pressure yourself to lock down a spouse before you’ve properly explored your dating options. (And there may be a secret Bridezilla in you since you probably dreamed of your wedding since you saw your first Disney flick.)

There’s no way around it though: Mars in Libra is a hopeless romantic who wants/needs to find The One. No skipping those courtship rituals! Fairy-tale encounters are the precursor to mind-blowing sex for you. Your idea of foreplay involves a dozen roses and a five-course dinner, followed by two tickets to a show (ideally in the VIP section). You love to be treated—and you’ll treat in return after your “pillow princess” moment. Aesthetics are essential, and you simply cannot settle for a partner who doesn’t please you visually.

Of course, you’re willing to give as good as you get, adorning yourself with decadent accouterments that would make the love goddess Venus herself a tad envious. As far as you’re concerned, the boudoir experience won’t be hot unless it’s haute. Think: luxe scented candles, rose petals scattered all over the bed, expensive lingerie and breakfast in bed the morning after, obvi! Since Libra rules the, er, lower back, you need a different kind of booty call. Now, where is that feather tickler riding crop?
