The first new moon of 2021 arrives in Capricorn on January 13. These two ritual ideas help you usher in the new year with a fresh round of inspiration.

The first new moon of the year brings a galvanizing burst of energy, a challenge to level up.

The zodiac’s Sea Goat is always on the climb, seeking greater status and building a legacy for generations to come. But here’s what we often forget about this zodiac sign: Capricorn has the head of a tenacious goat and the tail of a mermaid. A resolution without heart, soul and yes, magic, will struggle to make it to the finish line.

Here are two Capricorn new moon ritual ideas to try.

Ritual: A “Resolution Revolution” for the Capricorn new moon

Set your intentions

Rather than allow your inner taskmaster to create a punishing (and unrealistic) list, set intentions for the year ahead that warm your heart and light you up with joy and excitement.

For this Capricorn new moon ritual, you’ll need a few blank sheets of paper—and each resolution will need its own page. We don’t recommend tackling more than three per quarter. For some people, one is enough!

Write down your first goal at the top of a blank page. Make sure to state it as a positive instead of a negative— and be specific. For example, “Find A Job I Love” (positive) instead of “Leave the Job I Despise” (negative). Or “Get Back to My Yoga Practice” (specific) instead of “Start Working Out Again” (vague).

Then, answer the following questions:

  • Where am I now?
  • What lights me up about this goal?
  • When I achieve this goal, how do I imagine I will feel?
  • How can I make the process fun and enjoyable?
  • Who in my life can support/inspire/encourage me with achieving this goal?
  • What can I give them in return?
  • What is the first small step I can take towards this goal?
  • After that, what step can I take?
  • I know I will have achieved this goal when (list three measurable results)
After you finish answering these questions, close your eyes and visualize yourself already having achieved the goals. Let whatever feelings and sensations that arise come up without judging them. You might even feel a little scared; fear is natural when you’re stepping out of your comfort zone.

That said, if you can’t access any other feelings like excitement, inspiration or joy, this might not be your resolution for 2021. Set it aside and repeat the exercise until you have up to three resolutions that light you up.

When you’re done, we recommend tacking your resolutions on a wall where you can see them regularly. You might first place them under a crystal to give them an extra metaphysical charge until after the next full moon.

Ritual: A “Salt Bath Release” for the Capricorn new moon

It’s been a long year, and we’ve absorbed a lot of energy. Let’s give ourselves a cellular reset for the year on every level with a nurturing and sensual twist with this Capricorn new moon ritual.
What would you like to let go in 2021?
Tap into the earthy energy of Capricorn with a grounding “salt of the earth” bath. You can prepare it yourself with a few simple ingredients. In a bowl, mix together 6 parts coarse salt, 3 parts epsom salt, 1 part baking soda, and several drops essential oil like bergamot (to release anxiety, anger, loneliness or resentment, frankincense, jasmine or orange (to soothe your emotions while also awakening your inspiration).

Make your release list

Write down on paper what you’re releasing or letting go. Place it under a crystal or on an altar. Then take your salt bath!
You could opt to burn your releasing list after your salt bath. Just make sure to find a fireproof place to do this exercise.

Then burn it! (Carefully!)

  • Create a circle of stones, crystals, driftwood or any “found” objects from nature
  • Place your release list in a metal bowl, mini cauldron or fire pit in the middle of the ring
  • Thank whatever is on your list for the lessons then say aloud or silently, “Thank you for your service. I release you now.”
  • Burn, baby, burn!

Other Capricorn new moon ritual ideas to try

  • Organize 3-4 friends into a mastermind group or a support squad. Set up a weekly (or daily) call where you share setbacks and triumphs and hold each other accountable in an inspiring way.
  • Sign up for a session with a coach, master teacher or consultant who can help you take your vision even higher.
