The timing of new moons and the zodiac seasons

Once a month, the Sun and moon align at the very same zodiac sign and degree, which is when the new moon occurs. The Sun lights up the moon’s back, leaving la luna nearly invisible from our vantage point.

New moons reset the monthly cycle. As astrologers, we view these occasions as prime opportunities for releasing the past and planting seeds for the future.

You might not see results manifest immediately during a new moon, but they are times when faith is required. The seeds you plant may already show tiny sprouts two weeks later when the next full moon comes around. The big harvest time? That generally comes six months later, when the corresponding full moon arrives.

By corresponding full moon, we mean the full moon that is in the same zodiac sign as the new moon. For example, the Taurus new moon always happens during Taurus season between April 20 and May 21. The Taurus full moon arrives during Scorpio season (Taurus’ opposite sign) six months later, between October 23 and November 21. Note that the zodiac seasons may end one day earlier or later than above dates, depending on the Sun’s position each year.

This means you can set intentions at a new moon, channeling that zodiac sign’s energy, and then allow them to unfold over the next half-year. While you may notice changes quickly, it might not be until the full moon six months later that your new moon Tarot spread’s message comes time to harvest. Card 1: What this new moon is bringing me

This first Tarot card in the new moon Tarot spread can offer valuable information about what is meant for you during the new moon.

It may come in the form of a theme, topic, lesson or specific result.

With this first card’s arrival, you get an initial framing for the next four cards.

Card 2: My energy during this new moon

The second card in this new moon Tarot spread helps illuminate what you may be feeling.

It can represent the dominant energy you’re experiencing, or significant energetic shifts that you’ll notice during this time.

We appreciate this card because it helps us move closer toward acceptance and self-compassion with whatever energy might arise. Since new moons point us in a fresh direction, it’s natural to feel some trepidation or anxiety about the change that lies ahead.

Card 3: What I need to open myself to

New moons invite us to step into the unknown. In the process, they may call for us to release certain habits or relationships that are standing in the way, but that’s not always the case. Sometimes, we simply need to open our minds to ideas and opportunities that we’ve pushed away.

This third card may illuminate places where a perspective shift is needed.

This isn’t about forcing a change to happen. Rather, try to slowly open yourself up to the possibility of something novel entering your life. What feels scary about that…and most of all, what feels exciting? Allow yourself to embrace the full range of emotions. It’s all part of the process of transformation.

Card 4: Something that wants to manifest for me

The fourth card in this new moon Tarot spread helps bring the first three cards together.

While cards one through three may come through as themes or energetic changes, this card tends to be more concrete and practical. It reveals something in the material world or the here-and-now that awaits you—if you’re willing to be proactive.

Card 5: How I can best manifest my intentions

Yes, here’s the big advice card!

The new moon Tarot spread’s fifth card identifies what you can do to best bring your intentions alive. Remember, you may begin to manifest early results within two weeks when the next full moon arrives, but you have up to six months to bring about the bumper crop.

This card gives you clues about what you can actively do to get your mission in motion.

If there’s a key part of your experience that you have control over, the fifth and final card will help you pick it out!

Do you need to let something go? That could very well be the step this card offers. For example, you must sell your property in order to move to a new space or close down one business in order to begin working as a consultant.

Does each new moon bring a different theme to my Tarot spread?
