Tarot is the topic of a new movie in 2024, but it’s been a popular topic of movies for decades! A common genre for Tarot movies is horror, but is that fair? It certainly has launched the careers of many celebs! Here’s your Tarot movie 2024 guide.
Tarot cards are used to gain insight into a situation or question you have. Tarot cards in a spread are read to guide you, to help you identify obstacles or challenges and give you clues for how to move forward.
Can they summon a demon? Prooooobably not.
But Hollywood loves this common Tarot movie trope!
We believe Tarot card spreads are a powerful tool for self-reflection, spiritual growth and personal development. What is learned using Tarot cards depends on the situation or question being explored, and how they are interpreted by the reader. In other words, they are a great tool for positive exploration and self-empowerment, which is how we recommend using them.
Yet a new Tarot movie promises to keep the stereotype alive. Here’s a plot summary of the Tarot 2024 movie, from IMDb: “When a group of friends recklessly violates the sacred rule of Tarot readings—never use someone else’s deck—they unknowingly unleash an unspeakable evil trapped within the cursed cards. One by one, they come face to face with fate and end up in a race against death to escape the future foretold in their readings.”
Uhhhh…When did that rule become Tarot law? It’s truly uncool to use someone’s tarot deck without their permission. We do leave our energy on the objects we touch and many people just don’t like having other people’s hands on their decks.
Personally, we have invited people to shuffle the cards before we read for them. And we clear our decks before each reading, sometimes with sage or palo santo, or a long shuffle.
One Reddit user summed up a common concern when Tarot is portrayed as evil for the masses: “Just saw the trailer on Instagram and it sort of looks like they’re going to be demonizing the practice. Which, of course, in my opinion is disappointing. It does look like some of the antagonists are based off the Major Arcana, which is cool creatively. Don’t love the idea they’re going to be demonic (or ghosts?), though. I love horror movies, but I’m concerned this is just going to perpetuate the negative stereotypes about tarot.”
Same, Reddit user. Same.
Below is the official Tarot 2024 movie trailer from Sony so you can decide for yourself. The Tarot movie is due for release in theaters in May 2024.
Horror movies jump-start celebrity careers
So maybe we don’t love the plot of Tarot movie 2024, but there is precedent for horror movies launching some famous celebrity careers. This cannot be denied! Case in point:
• Jennifer Aniston made her debut in the 1992 horror movie, Leprechaun, a charming (if not kinda terrible) movie made two years before Friends premiered.
• Brad Pitt made his debut in 1989’s teen slasher, Cutting Class (get it?).
• Leonardo DiCaprio, long before breaking hearts in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape and starring in one of the most famous films of all time, Titanic, he starred in the horror movie Critters 3, in 1991!
• Johnny Depp made his debut in the first A Nightmare on Elm Street in 1984, when we first met Freddy Krueger. (Johnny just played the cute neighbor who got sucked into his bed along with his TV—sorta epic). Johnny of course went on to cement teen idol status in 21 Jump Street and mega fame in Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise.
• Kevin Bacon made his debut in the 1980 quintessential horror movie, Friday the 13th (the first in the long-running Jason Voorhees series).
• Tom Hanks, before he started collecting Oscars and becoming one of the world’s most likable movie stars, debuted his acting chops in a He Knows You’re Alone, also in 1980.
• Jamie Lee Curtis, the long-reining Queen of Horror of course got her start in Halloween, the first of the franchise that endures to this day (with Curtis appearing in other installments).
What About Celebrities In Tarot Movies, Though?
While the above list of celebrities who debuted in horror movies isn’t exhaustive (really, there are so many more celebrities who got their start in slasher flicks, like Demi Moore, Hilary Swank, Octavia Spencer, Chloë Grace Moretz!) it sadly(?) doesn’t include Tarot movies.
Perhaps the Tarot movie 2024 will launch a career of its fairly unknown cast into the same household-name category of those listed above? In the meantime…
