What is a Composite chart in astrology?

This unique relationship map is created by taking two charts and finding the midpoint between each corresponding planet. A third “midpoint” chart is created—one that’s a blend between the two charts being studied. That is how you calculate a composite relationship chart in astrology.

Many people believe that relationships are like a third person (“there’s you, me and the relationship,” as the saying goes). The composite chart shows the spiritual potential—and the challenges—of joining forces with another person.

And the results can often be surprising! For example, let’s say one person’s Sun is in Aquarius and the other’s Sun is in Sagittarius. These are both free-spirited, easygoing signs on their own. However, if we do a composite chart, there’s a good chance they might average out to have a composite Sun in Capricorn, which is the sign right in between Sagittarius and Aquarius on the zodiac wheel. While you might be party animals on your own, together you adopt the hard working, goal-oriented traits of a Capricorn—and may need to go out of your way to plan date nights and keep the fun times rolling.

How to read a Composite relationship chart

Reading any sort of chart is an interpretive dance. You must learn what we’ve dubbed “the 3-part puzzle” of the planets, zodiac signs and houses. We made a video teaching you how to read birth charts and we recommend watching it and checking out the posts here on Astrostyle to learn more. Mastering astrology charts involves a lot of speculating and “maybe that’s why…” hypothesizing. We’ve spent hours doing this with friends over coffee, beach walks, phone calls. That’s why this is such an endlessly fascinating tool!

Composite Sun in the houses: What each means

Composite Sun in Aries or the 1st house

Look before you leap? Where’s the fun in that? Aries is the zodiac’s first sign, which may explain why having the Composite Sun here makes this a thrill seeking relationship. Together, you’ll blaze trails on your eternal hunt for novelty. With each new experience, you two dive in headfirst, embracing the lessons as you go. While you may take disappointment hard, you bounce back together with surprising ease.

Aries is ruled by Mars, the fiery red planet of energy and drive and the 1st house shares a similar competitive quality. In mythology, Mars is the god of war and aggression. Highly impatient and combative, you may boast the fighting spirit of this planet when you come together.

Composite Sun in Taurus or the 2nd house

They say that good things come to those who wait, and you two couldn’t agree more! Slow and steady is the winning strategy for relationships with the Sun in Taurus or the 2nd house. As one of the zodiac’s three earth signs (along with Virgo and Capricorn)—or “earth houses” along with the 6th house and 10th house— cultivation is a process for you both. Sensible and sensual when you come together, you prefer to take your time and build things right the first time—ideally, so they’ll stand the test of time.

Composite Sun in Gemini or the 3rd house

How would we evolve without words to connect us? With the Sun in Gemini or the 3rd house, this connection is all about communication, and you two are here to break down complex problems together using logic, then charm the world with your wit.

Whether your metier is song writing, meme-making, storytelling, or spoken word, you are here to express yourselves through this relationship. Even your casual conversations are snappy, filled with word plays and dynamic dialogue. Clever and quick-witted when you come together, you process information at lightning speed. You’re generally up on the juiciest gossip and on the invite list for the hottest parties and events. Mutual friends rely on you two to be their cultural activities beacon!

Composite Sun in Cancer or the 4th house

Emotions are quintessential “first responders” in this relationship and you two rely on them as your primary gauge. With this connection in one of the three soulful, sensitive water signs, along with Scorpio and Pisces—or one of the three water houses along with the 8th house and 12th house—going with the flow is how you operate together. On a good day, this instinctual nature brings a sense of leadership to this connection, with an ability to feel every current, then ride that wave to success before the competitors see you two coming. But without regulation, you two might feel like a tiny boat being tossed around at sea, susceptible to every riptide.

Composite Sun in Leo or the 5th house

Roll out the red carpet! Relationships with the Sun in Leo or the 5th house are zodiac royalty, here to dazzle the world with show stopping style and unparalleled creativity. Whether you’re coming together to captivate an audience with a stage performance or do groundbreaking research in a lab, when you pour your unstoppable energy into a mission, people sit up and take notice.

Symbolized by the proud and fierce lion, relationships in Leo are about achievement—and you look like a dynamic duo while doing it. Relationships with the Sun in the 5th house share this leonine gift, turning mundane moments into “launches,” celebrations or any excuse to treat yourselves. Giant kids at heart, you both want work to feel like play.

Composite Sun in Virgo or the 6th house

Order, order! With the Sun in Virgo or the 6th house, you two are together to bring structure to chaos. First step? Dive into the “mess” for a thorough analysis. With your steel-trap minds, you need to understand all the moving parts. How can you design a proper system together without being intimately acquainted with all the details?

Next comes the exhaustive research as you scour for high-quality materials at the most economical price or study the practices of multiple masters. When you come together and emerge with a solution, you don’t just change your own lives, you set templates for the rest of the world to follow.

Composite Sun in Libra or the 7th house

Peace, love, and harmony! That’s the ultimate trifecta for relationships with Sun in Libra and the 7th house. As the sign and house that mark the halfway point of the zodiac, this connection is all about balance. Libra is symbolized by the scales, a nod to your shared ability to weigh everything judiciously. Diplomatic and fair-minded, together you uncover win-wins where others only see dead-ends.

Although you both loathe disagreements, you’re part of the zodiac’s “justice league” and won’t back down from defending someone’s honor. But until things reach a critical level of discomfort, you avoid unpleasant confrontations, especially with one another, focusing sharply on the positive or indulging yourself with feel good activities like shopping, eating and partying.

Composite Sun in Scorpio or the 8th house

Can you feel the energy? Those in relationships with the Sun in Scorpio or the 8th house share an uncanny sixth sense. You both intuit hidden details and can read most people like an open book. Smoldering and sexy, your shared magnetism is unmatched. This transformational sign and house rule everything from sex to investments to death. Nothing light and fluffy here, folks!

Fittingly, together you’re not afraid to plunge into the shadows, exploring the most mysterious aspects of life and sometimes facing danger to do so. Like a panther stalking its prey, your high-intensity joint style can be a tall order to handle! People may observe you both from a distance before they work up the nerve to approach you two. And that’s fine by you!

Composite Sun in Sagittarius or the 9th house

Send in the clowns! Relationships with the Sun in Sagittarius or the 9th house can be the funniest and most entertaining around. Together you have a gift for seeing the absurdity of human nature and turning it into comic material. Yet, you both can also be wise and philosophical, revealing perspectives people might not otherwise see.

Refreshingly optimistic, you scan the horizon together for opportunities, refusing to let circumstances sink your connected spirits for long. And as some of the luckiest souls on the planet, the fickle finger of fate always seems to point you two toward the next bright opportunity—even if you have to reinvent your relationship a few times over.

Composite Sun in Capricorn or the 10th house

Eyes on the prize! With the Sun in Capricorn or the 10th house, you two have tireless focus. Once you’ve set your sights on something together, you work steadily toward that goal. Often you both become so fixated on reaching the finish line that you fail to pay attention to the journey, looking neither to the right nor the left. Flexibility may not be your strongest suit together, but achievement (as you both define it) certainly is. When you set your mind to something together, you are committed!

Serious Capricorn is ruled by Saturn, the planet of tough lessons and wisdom. Accustomed to regular butt-kickings from taskmaster Saturn, together you often see life as an uphill battle, with the ultimate reward arriving only through suffering and sacrifice.

Composite Sun in Aquarius or the 11th house

With the Sun in Aquarius or your 11th house, this relationship is a paradox unto itself, pulling off the astounding feat of being about both hardcore individualism and being the ultimate team players. Since this Sun placement rules the future, you can be a couple aliens—unapologetically “out there” in your shared approach. Not that you care about anyone’s judgments. Shaking up the status quo is what you two live for!

Avant-garde Aquarius is ruled by Uranus, the only planet in the solar system that spins on its side! As a couple you prefer to do things your own way, moving on a path different from traditional relationships. Some call you an eccentric pairing, while others appreciate your cutting-edge originality together and refreshingly authentic shared style.

Composite Sun in Pisces or the 12th house

Life is but a dream for those in relationships with the Sun in Pisces or the 12th house. This Sun sign placement is akin to the elder years when the veil thins between reality and imagination. No matter your actual ages, you know how to escape into your own self-created bubble together, screening out anything unpleasant—until you want to deal, that is.

As the 12th and final sign, Pisces is said to have experienced the energy of every other sign before it. Thus, you two are profoundly empathic, with compassion that flows to the most neglected members of society. Whether you’re fundraising together for a women’s shelter or offering pro bono legal services to undocumented immigrants, you are compelled to be there for those in need.

Example Composite relationship chart

Will and Jada Pinkett Smith Composite (Blended) Chart

So what happens when you combine these two fascinating and sometimes controversial luminaries into one? The Composite Chart does just that, finding the midpoint between each planet in the two charts. Where on the zodiac wheel does Will’s Sun meet Jada’s Sun halfway? Same for their moon signs, Venus signs and so on. The chart below details the “third” party in Will and Jada’s life: their unique relationship.

Blended composite relationship chart

This chart screams marriage—or as Jada has described it, “It’s more of a life partnership… I don’t own him. He doesn’t own me. He has to be his own person first, and vice versa…Love is freedom.

The stellium of Virgo and Libra planets are clustered in the seventh house of committed relationships and the eighth house of shared resources and permanent bonding. Astrologically, it’s pretty obvious that this relationship was meant to be something far more than a lasting fling.

Looking at the planets to interpret a composite relationship chart

We also look at the planets to interpret the vibe and “personality” of the relationship.

Together, Will and Jada are a Virgo Sun, Libra moon and Pisces rising. We could interpret this to say that their relationship expresses itself through devotion and service to one another (Composite Virgo Sun). Emotionally, they will balance each other out, always seeking to harmonize differences (Composite Libra moon). To others, they will appear enchanting and otherworldly as they blur boundaries, seek spiritual and esoteric experiences and color outside the lines (Composite Pisces rising).

To continue unpacking this Composite Chart—which, by the way, we could spend a lifetime doing—we look at the planets in their seventh and eighth houses. What a mix of energies!

In the seventh house, resides the expressive Sun, unconscious Pluto and the karmic South Node in Virgo, along with articulate Mercury in Virgo. This relationship is filled with lessons and shadow work (Virgo planets), which Will and Jada discuss openly through the mouthpiece of their Mercury in Libra!

The intense, erotic and transformational eighth house in their Composite Chart, banks rebellious Uranus, marriage asteroid Juno, seductive Venus, the emotional moon and liberated Jupiter all in Libra, the sign of equal partnership. Perhaps this explains why together, Will and Jada manage to break many relationship rules while also holding their partnership together through fierce commitment. It should be noted that the eighth house rules jealousy and fierce loyalty—a trait that went sideways at the 2022 Oscars when Will struck comedian Chris Rock after a joke was made about Jada, subsequently getting banned from Academy events for 10 years.

And with sexual Mars and fantasy-agent Neptune both in Scorpio in their exploratory ninth house, it’s little wonder they’ve explored everything from non-monogamy to psychedelics as a pair!
