The 2027 Total Solar Eclipse in Leo is on August 2

The shadow of the Leo supermoon will grow over Luxor, Egypt, for a whopping SIX minutes and TWENTY seconds on August 2, 2027, at 6:05AM for NYC and at 3:05PM Egypt time.

The 2027 total solar eclipse’s darkened sky will be seen from many points but the longest duration of “totality” will be experienced in Egypt—and you can see it with us (more on that in a bit)!

The 2027 total solar eclipse will be the second longest in the 21st century; the longest was actually on July 22, 2009 (six minutes and nearly forty seconds)—in the sign of Cancer—and considered to be the most witnessed in history, but it’s totality wasn’t visible by land. The 2027 total solar eclipse’s totality will be visible on land (hence the ‘Eclipse of the Century’ label) and it’s expected to draw record crowds around the world. The next longest total solar eclipse—visible totality by land—won’t occur again until 2114!

What is the path of the 2027 Total Solar Eclipse? According to NASA: The 2027 total solar eclipse “will be visible in southern Spain, North Africa (including Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, and Egypt), Saudi Arabia and Yemen. A partial eclipse will be visible in most of Europe, much of Africa, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, eastern Canada, northern Maine in the U.S., as well as the Atlantic and Indian oceans.” You can also consult this map from the National Solar Observatory to see if your location is included.

The 2027 total solar eclipse is actually the fourth of five eclipses we’ll experience in 2027, and the second solar eclipse (the balance are lunar eclipses).

What Solar Eclipses mean

During solar eclipses, the moon is directly between the earth and Sun (known as a conjunction, or meetup, of the Sun and the moon). During this brief time, the moon casts a shadow on the earth and can block out the Sun’s light, temporarily disconnecting us from our sense of reality. Solar eclipses occur at new moons. (Lunar eclipses occur at full moons.)

In astrology, a solar eclipse could bring a bold beginning, setting us on a new path that we hadn’t imagined for ourselves. While it may be surprising—or not something you even expected—a solar eclipse has a bigger vision in store for us. The 2027 Total Solar Eclipse is also a supermoon

A supermoon is a new or full moon that arrives at a closer-than-usual distance to Earth. The technical name for supermoon is perigee-syzgy moon. At a perigee moon, the moon is at its closer than typical distance from Earth, therefore it can cause it to appear larger (and possibly brighter, but not necessarily).

Does a supermoon always mean the moon will be “extra powerful?” We believe the proximity of the moon can dial up the energy people receive. Much like the nurturing and creative powers it represents, the mystical moon has inspired awe for eons. And when the skies serve up a supermoon, we feel that connection more strongly, as the gravitational forces of this heavenly body come closer to those of our planet.

And if nothing else, a supermoon can make a lovely sight, as the 2027 total solar eclipse will on August 2, 2027, certainly will!

Fun fact: typically there are three or four supermoons each year. In 2027, there are four including the August 2 new moon in Leo/total solar eclipse. The others are the January 22 full moon in Leo, the July 4 new moon in Cancer, and the August 31 new moon in Virgo—but none of them are eclipses!
