If you’ve ever heard an astrologer talk about cazimi, or read a headline announcing one and you didn’t know what it means, here’s an easy explanation for this astrological term and phenomenon.
Cazimi is a term astrologers use to describe when planets are within one degree of conjunction with the Sun.
The word “cazimi” is a Latin transliteration of the Arabic term kaṣmīmī, which means “as if in the heart,” according to The Astrology Dictionary. The Arabic term translates from the Greek term egkardios, which means “in the heart.” Astrologers refer to a planet cazimi (conjunction) as being “in the heart of the Sun.”
A conjunction is a planetary aspect in astrology to describe when two planets are traveling close together in the same zodiac sign. As a result, they blend their energies. This can either be an extremely powerful alliance—like a megadose of one kind of energy—or too much of a good thing.
So, simply: cazimi means we all feel the astrological “flex” of whichever planet is in the heart of the Sun, colored by the zodiac sign they’re in. When we experience cazimi—depending on which planet is conjuct the Sun, and in which zodiac sign—astrologers interpret the energies we can expect to feel and the opportunities we may have, like the annual Jupiter cazimi, referred to as The Day of Miracles.

Another example of a cazimi in astrology
A Sun-Venus cazimi happened on June 4, 2024. The Sun and Venus were at the very same degree that day. Venus was “bathed” in the Sun’s rays. That sounds lovely, right? Because the Sun can be radiant and luminous, generous and magnanimous—beautiful if that fuels Venus. But the Sun is more of a yang energy and Venus is more of a yin energy. So when their energies blend in cazimi, they can polarize: the Sun can become authoritarian and ego-driven, while Venus is love and beauty and harmony.
This particular cazimi took place in Gemini. As the confident Sun and affectionate Venus united in this clever sign, we experienced intelligence being the biggest turn-on. It was a perfect day for meetings of the minds—and hearts! On that day, if you sparked up conversation with someone you found attractive, for example, you may have caught a knowing twinkle in their eye. It was also a good day to add magnetism to your messaging, whether for your personal brand, a work pitch or just a get-to-know-you chat.
Think of cazimi as a giving you a brief superpower!
How long does a cazimi last? How often are cazimis?
The planets are always moving! And just as we celebrate our solar return annually (our birthday every 365 days, when the Earth completes its orbit of the Sun!), most of the planets are conjunct the Sun annually (or more often). Some planets take longer to conjunct the Sun; so, for example, a Mars cazimi, Saturn cazimi or Uranus cazimi is more rare/can take several years.
You’ll most often hear about Jupiter cazimi, Venus cazimi and Mercury cazimi, which can also happen during Mercury retrograde. These are the planets that conjunct the Sun most often.
The moon, while not technically a planet, conjuncts the Sun once a month, at the time of the new moon.
The actual “super powers” of a cazimi last for the time that the planet (or the moon) is within that one degree of the Sun. Generally, this only lasts for a few hours or one day. To get a real-time view of where the planets are, you can consult an ephemeris or resources like Astro-Seek.com.
What is the degree of cazimi?
For cazimi (or a conjunction) to occur, remember, the planets are within one degree of the Sun. A cazimi is just one aspect (or angle) in astrology, each of which creates different energies and effects for us on Earth.
