Neptune retrograde rolls back the fog of denial, distraction and delusion

Neptune retrogrades annually for about five months. These periods can be deeply introspective times—but ones that require extra reality checks. You may feel like retreating or escaping from the world, which can be a healing process or one that lures you back to a destructive habit or lapses you into past patterns.

Stay aware of where your thoughts are drifting. Devise new strategies to overcome emotional and psychological stumbling blocks when you can.

Neptune spends about 15 years in each zodiac sign, taking 29.5 years to cycle through all 12. Saturn returned to Pisces in 2023, for the first time since the mid-1990s. Saturn is in Pisces (with its annual retrogrades) until 2026, not to return again until 2052!

What to work on during the 2024 Neptune retrograde in Pisces—and get results

Revisit creative projects. Use this head-clearing transit to revisit unfinished creative projects. If you’re already on track, Neptune retrograde nudges you to bring more meaning into your work. You can do so by amplifying your creativity, or bringing a socially responsible element into the equation.

Take inventory of your feelings. Is it time to heal a layer of emotional trauma? Work on the core issues that may lie beneath any addictive or unhealthy behaviors, too, whether in your financial habits or the way you operate in relationships.

Awareness is the key to evolution! Own up to unhealthy patterns so you can learn to break them. With fog-machine Neptune in the time-out chair, you can cut through illusions—IF you are willing to take an unflinching audit of your life. Use the Neptune retrograde in Pisces period to explore the shadows.

Set up support systems so you don’t give in to toxic temptations. “Just this once” can become famous last words while Neptune retrogrades through Pisces. While Neptune intensifies its boundary-dissolving effect in its home sign of Pisces, that advice really goes double.

This meditative five-month cycle can be a profound blessing. It can open a window to deal with core wounds and addictions (from liquor to love to limiting beliefs). Meanwhile, it can let you tap into buried realms of creativity.

Shield your field against energy vampires. Distance yourself from draining or codependent relationships. Try an extra layer of protection like healthy boundaries, crystals, salt baths and therapy. Make sure to keep your psychic shield up, though, especially while in public. Like a sponge, you can absorb the mood of a room or get thrown off emotionally by a stranger’s vibes.

Giving others the benefit of the doubt can be noble, but also naïve. As gullible Neptune powers down for its backspin in compassionate Pisces, practice more healthy self-protection. Put safety first and don’t feel guilty if you get a weird vibe from someone and need to back away. Allow yourself that moment to honor your intuition. It’s possible you’re imagining things and could hit it off on the second try. But maybe something truly is “off.” Don’t ignore your gut!

Get plenty of rest. The best ideas may arrive while you’re sleeping, meditating or just staring at the clouds. Cue your Calm app and blow the dust off your dream journal.

Meanwhile: Another retrograde takes place simultaneously in Pisces

Beep, beep beep—is that another planet reversing through the sensitive water sign? Why, yes it is. It’s Saturn retrograde in Pisces.

Saturn beats Neptune to the backspin in Pisces (going retrograde on June 29). The two planets share the reverse commute through summer and well into fall (Saturn until November 5, Neptune until December 7).

This double dose of planetary retrograde energy in Pisces is especially weird because Saturn and Neptune are a cosmic odd couple. Boundary-hound Saturn likes firm plans, solid schedules and reality checks. Boundary-dissolving Neptune rules the realm of fantasy, fluidity and imagination.

While both planets are in reverse, we’ll all need to be time travelers, moving through what the Greeks called chronos and kairos time. “Chronos” (as in chronological) is system that can be measured by the clock and the cycles of the moon. Fun fact: In Roman lore, Saturn is named Kronos, so yes, this is the domain, the ringed planet rules. “Kairos” is the liminal flow state that occurs when we get so absorbed in what we’re doing that we lose track of minutes—hours even. Dreamy Neptune brings us fully into this time zone.

While Saturn and Neptune are retrograde, work at identifying your structured time and your free time. How can you become more efficient with work and obligatory routines so that you have more time to relax, meditate and just be? Also, what tangible assets are needed to help you build your dream?

Your Neptune retrograde in Pisces horoscope

Below is your sign’s horoscope for the Neptune retrograde in Pisces, July 2 to December 7. You can read for your Sun sign or your rising sign (ascendant).

Aries (March 21-April 19)

Going offline in 3…2…1? Fantasy planet Neptune pivots into its annual five-month retrograde in your twelfth house of dreams, illusions and imagination. Between July 2 and December 7, you could hit on the most brilliant idea, get lost in reveries, commune with your muse, tap into the divine—and likely, a little of all of that! Get immersed, take notes, but maybe leave yourself a trail of breadcrumbs so you can find your way back when Neptune eventually straightens out.

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

Watch for less than true-blue friends and colleagues who don’t have your back starting now, Bull. You’re generally good at sniffing out these “faux amis,” but for the next five months, hazy Neptune will be spinning retrograde in gullible Pisces and your eleventh house of community and social networking, from July 2 until December 7. Neptune is a famous wrench-thrower under the best of circumstances, and in reverse, things can get seriously wonky. Use this transit to review your inner circle as well as some of the outer rings.

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

Career inspiration strikes as playful Neptune has backflipped into retrograde in your professional tenth house from July 2 until December 7. But since the planet of intuition and mysticism is also the chief cosmic trickster, it’s hard—make that impossible—to predict what shifts it might bring. Ideas and opportunities can strike from out of the blue, but with Neptune in reverse gear, they could disappear or go sideways just as suddenly. To be safe, go the extra mile to get the full story before you do anything.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

You’ve been eager to scratch your wanderlust itch for a while now, Cancer, and as impressionable Neptune turns retrograde in your expansive ninth house, you may experience full-blown cabin fever. And we hardly blame you! But bear in mind, Neptune is the planet of inspiration AND delusion, meaning that from July 2 until December 7, things won’t always be as they seem. Double-check all itineraries and reservations, and maybe keep a backup plan in place.

Leo (July 23-August 22)

Enchanting Neptune backs up through dreamy Pisces and your seductive, mysterious eighth house from July 2 until December 7. Prepare for some intense experiences over the coming five months. If you’re in a relationship, things could take a turn for the unexpected, perhaps involving a deeper level of commitment—or the opposite! It’s hard to pin Neptune down, so let this upcoming cycle be your personal life coach for learning how to simply accept what comes up without judging or trying to control it.

Virgo (August 23-September 22)

Soulful Neptune is retrograde in Pisces and your seventh house for five months, which could throw a wrench into a key relationship. As the planet of intuition and mysticism—but also the cosmic trickster—it COULD illuminate aspects of the union that had been just below the level of consciousness. On the other hand, it can leave you utterly bewildered between July 2 and December 7. If nothing else, this transit may teach you better ways to determine what’s really true versus what you WANT to believe.

Libra (September 23-October 22)

Your health, daily habits and self-nurturing come under review starting now as perceptive Neptune turns retrograde in Pisces and your sixth house wellness zone from July 2 until December 7. This will come as happy news if you’ve been eager to make improvements to your self-care routines. But take your time! Neptune can confuse things, and certain issues that are coming up for you might not be what they first seem to be. Get second opinions before you embark on anything radical, expensive or that limits your lifestyle, which is so important to your sensual sign.

Scorpio (October 23-November 21)

Mysterious Neptune shifts retrograde, backing up through your fifth house of romance, creativity and drama, beginning July 2. Make art for art’s sake; make love and BE love…but don’t expect things to go precisely the way you want them to. With the planet of fantasy off-course until December 7, the lesson you’ll bump into time and time again is to just go with the flow. Control is an illusion, though you do get to co-create with the universe. For the next five months, practice letting that be enough.

Sagittarius (November 22-December 21)

Soulful Neptune starts its annual retrograde on July 2, retreating through sensitive Pisces and your fourth house of family and foundations until December 7. But you won’t be the only one sporting thinner-than-usual skin! Going into this five-month cycle knowing that can help—sometimes! It’ll be easier to manage if you live alone, or at least have plenty of your own space. But for Archers who cohabitate, you may need to work out some new house rules to ensure that everyone feels “heard” and like their needs are being filled.

Capricorn (December 22-January 19)

Pardon us, could you say that again? Hazy Neptune is spins retrograde in your third house of community and communication. Mixed messages could abound, so make sure you’re being extra-precise. Between July 2 and December 7, you may start to see certain people through a different lens—some for the better, but others could totally take you by surprise. There’s nothing to resent, however, Cap. Clarity is always a good thing, even if you have to swallow a bitter pill. Just remember that Neptune is an unreliable narrator, so don’t take everything at face value.

Aquarius (January 20-February 18)

If you’ve struggled to get a handle on your finances for the past several months, you’ll get to review your status and consider new options starting July 2. Alchemical Neptune goes retrograde in your second house of money and security for the next five months (until December 7). And while this planet does have a reputation as being a bit of a trickster, its nonlinear style can be amazing for manifesting. Make smart, even conservative, moves—and open up your mindset to one of abundance—and see what happens!

Pisces (February 19-March 20)

It’s not so much about “downshifting” as your ruler, alchemical Neptune, reverses into its annual five-month retrograde in your sign. It’s more about opening to even higher dimensions and dreamier possibilities than your mystical sign thought possible! And because your cosmic ruler is driving in reverse from July 2 until December 7, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to reflect back on past endeavors and neglected aspects of your personality that are crying out for rediscovery now. It’s a great time to embark on a spiritual practice or deepen an intimate relationship.
